Question about 1998 Nissan 200SX

Trouble downshifting I have a new clutch. I have trouble downshifting from say third to second when slowing. Does not want to engage.

If it only happens between third and second, it could be the syncro for second gear is worn out.

any noise from gearbox when you engaging clutch when engine is running? Check for oil as well. Firstly I suggest to drain oil out and check for particles in the oil, synchros could be damaged

I'm haveing trouble installing throw out bearing on my 1990 ford ranger just got done installing my second throw out bearing and I'm still having the same problem clutch pedal does not engage


There should have been a clip to secure the bearing on the fork shaft. Was it secure??
Clutch may not engage if clutch master cylinder or clutch slave have not been properly bled. There is no adjustment on hydraulic systems. Bleed again if necessary.

Ac will blow warm air, the clutch does not engage. Could this be a compressor prob? Looked in the manual ...no trouble shooting ideas


Since you know that the clutch must engage in order for the compressor to operate, then there are most likely one of causes. The first is low or no freon in the system. The a/c system has a pressure sensor mounted in the low( return) side hose that prevents the clutch to engage if the freon is too low. The second would be the a/c fuse or relay faulty, preventing the clutch solenoid( a 12 volt electrically operated solenoid) from engaging. And the third would be that the clutch itself is bad because the solenoid wiring has broken. I suggest that first you locate the a/c clutch relay in the relay panel, remove the relay, carefully remove the plastic cover from the relay and reinstall the relay. The clutch should engage the compressor when you manually close the relay contact with your finger for one or two seconds. If the clutch does engage, your electrical circuit in ok and you are probably low on freon. A half of a can of r-134 in more that enough to operate the pressure switch. If it doesn't engage, check the a/c fuse or the clutch solenoid itself. Get back to me and let me know how things went. Dano

Generally, what causes C-4's and C-6's to be slugish going into gear, is the seals on the servo pistons are getting hard. The servo pistons are what apply pressure on the clutch packs, when the seals get hard the oil can blow past the piston and the clutch won't engage. It's worse when the the trany is cold and usualy gets better as the oil gets warm. You could try some transmission conditioner, the cheep stuff works as good as the high dollar stuff. Don't rev the engine to try to get it to go into gear, the clutch is trying to engage and you will burn the clutch up pack. If the clutches were replaced 3k miles ago why didn't they put seals in it at the same time?

Engine gets to a high RPM before it shifts


check all vacuum starting at the pump on these mpodels and see if you are getting around 29" of vacuum. if you are not this is your issue. it sounds like it is doing it mechanically and not assisted. this is a very good way to destroy your transmission. it is very possible that you have a leak somewhere else in the system causing a vacuum leak. i am guessing all your door locks do not work.email me at iambanshee74@yahoo.com

Auto tranny slipping after shifting out of second


Firstly is it slow for reverse, reverse clutch also engages in 3rd gear however reverse has a boosted circuit (more psi) therefore will engage rev but not 3rd but it is a little slow for reverse.
They do have a tendancy to pop a ball out of the High and reverse clutch giving this symptom.

You may have a stripped synchro that is making it difficult. Run the car up to speed in second, fairly high RPM, then clutch in and push for third, and just hold the lever against whatever is keeping you out of third gear. See if, as the RPM fall, you are able to slot the lever in. If you're only having trouble with third, then you may well have damage to that gear. If you have trouble in multiple gears, it may just be a fluid issue. You could try draining the old transmission fluid and putting new stuff in and see if it helps.
