Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My 65 Ford Falcon will not start, we checked the spark and fuel and it is both good. I heard a rattle before this happened and backfiring, does this sound like the timing chain? Or could it be a valve rattle caused by a failing fuel pump? The fuel pump had gone bad and was leaking.

My first question is - does it have normal compression on all cylinders?
If not, it could be the timing chain.
The fuel pump runs on a part of the crankshaft, so the cam should not affect it.
If you have normal compression, fuel in the carb, and spark at the right time, it should start.

Testimonial: "Hi there well I am not sure about the compression but I know the car was running great before the rattling started. I thought the rattling was coming from the failing fuel pump but I think I was wrong. Several guys have looked at it and they all say the timing is off and that the chain could have jumped a few teeth and there is no way to fix that except to remove the chain and put a new one on. When I try and start it, it will try and start but won't."

Check for a bad distributor cap and or rotor..........a bad cap and or rotor can caues firing (cross fire)across the terminals and introduce spark to the wrong cylinders at the wrong time.......
hope this helps.....good luck!

SOURCE: 2000 gmc jimmy wont start fuel pump comes on and cuts off...

the fuel pressure if leaking could cause this the regulator is located under the intake plenum but you should smell gas .if you dont then most likely the pump is bad ,the pump will come on for 2 seconds when the key is on then go off it will not stay on with just the key on only when you crank it will it .so have your fuel pressure checked with a gauge.

I have a ford falcon 2002 xr6 ute with vct tickford motorist just stoped while driving gave a miss fire I have replaced crank sensor module coil fuel pump fuel filter still wont run running very ruf

On my falcon the same thing happened changed dizzy, coil even got new spark plugs what it turned out to be was auxiliary shaft that turns the dizzy or the dizzy module if you got coil packs. You can't see down the dizzy hole because its under the inlet manifold so take photo with your phone and you might see little bits of metal The auxiliary shaft teeth on the dizzy end where worn out and folding over so it can't give the proper spark at right time so went to wreckers 20 bucks for another. ford says it can't happen but I know quite a few engines with same problem

Why is my 2004 Ford Freestar engine rattles when I accelerate even after a tune up has being done to the engine?

Pre-ignition or knock maybe. Ignition timing over-advanced, fuel mixture weak, or possibly the plugs. Faulty knock sensor?

Why my 2005 ba ford falcon wont start?

Its either no spark or no gas. Remove the fuel line and carefully crank it over..are you getting any fuel? If not possibly clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. If yes, are the spark plugs firing. Remove number one plug lead hold close to any metal surface on engine, crank over ..spark there..strong or weak spark? No spark check coil and associated parts.

1996 gmc jimmy wont start seems like advanced timing issue backfiring out throttlebody, replaced timing pick up, distribitor cap, crank sensor, ICM, when ignition conrol module replace the engine ran fine...

You said the problem happened right after the engine was replaced correct? If so bring number cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is lined up with the number one spark plug wire. It's possible the distributor was installed 180 degrees out.

No spark but car cranks over

Have you checked for fuel pressure ? With only 1 coil pak out, the car should start. So, start from the beginning, ... Check for spark on several plug wires. If spark, then check for fuel, is the fuel pump working? Check the breaker in the trunk, drivers side behind the panel. If still no fuel, then could be a wire short or fuse,or just the pump in the tank needs to be replaced. If you do have spark and fuel, then check the MAF sensor on the air intake. This will shut the motor down more so then the MAP. Only Ford has this part and it cost's, and once you open the box they will not take it back. Have someone, or even Ford check the MAF sensor, or check at a scrap yard for hopefully a good used one. There's more to check, including the crank sensor, but start with this. Good luck.

Ford falcon el. wont start. raa checked has spark & pulse, where is the fuel line under the hood

Most older cars have a mechanical fuel pump mounted to the side of the engine. Usually turns from the Cam or Crankshaft. i would check under the Valve Cover area. should be a small pump that is mechanically driven by the engine. probably half the size of your fist. Trace the fuel line from the carb to it. most oder cars have this set-up. I hope this helps you out. Never worked on a Ford Falcon. My 74 dodge B100 had that as well as my 78 Lemans. Good Luck!
