Question about 1984 Chevrolet S-10

2 Answers

My 4X4 1984 Chevy S10 has developed a grinding noise when I get to 60 - 65 mph in the front right wheel. (Passenger side) It sounds like the 4 wheel drive is trying to engage. I have to slow down to almost a stop then there is "clunk" like a disengagement sound, then I am good to go. The previous owner was told it could be the switch on the dash. They probably meant the solenoid switch that the dash switch controls to engage the 4X4, Is it or is it something loose or worn in the RF hub assembly?

It sounds like the solenoid is trying to engage the synchronizer for the front diff or you have a very bad wheel bearing .

When you hit your brakes does your steering wheel shimmy a little bit? If not it is most likely your bearings in your wheel have gone bad. If it shimmy's it also could be your ball joints.

bad u-joint would be the first thing to look for if the sound is coming from just one side. when you engage the front axle, you put it under load and it shuts up.

Rides loud once you get up to 20 mph sounds like grinding on front passenger side

perform this test, SAFELY! while driving at 20-30 mph lightly pull steering wheel to left, then to right, if sound worsens, then gets better in the other direction, I believe you have a wheel bearing problem. this will be a hub bearing assembly, and is not a difficult repair.

Grumbling noise in front drivers side of car.Worst at 30-40 mph.

Sound more like the wheel/hub bearing. An axle will usually make a clicking noise when turning, and be quiet when going straight. It probably wont break by may but it may get louder. Get it checked asap.

Grinding noise front end.

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

sounds like a possible wheel bearing issue or brake pad issue!!! i would definatly have this looked at, but in the meantime, make sure that it isnt just a backing plate contacting the rotor ...hope this was helpful!!

Noise when in 4 x 4

Bad news... It sounds like you have a broken/stripped axle. I would start at the wheel and start disassembling from the outside in. It may just be a stripped spline in the spindle.
