One of the most important things to remember is that there is a definite procedure to follow.
NOTE: Do not take any short cuts or assume that critical checks or adjustments have already been made.
Follow the procedures as written to avoid missing critical components or steps.
To properly diagnose a concern have the following publications available:
  • Transmission Reference Manual.
  • Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.
  • TSBs and OASIS Messages.
  • Wiring Diagram.
These publications provide the information required when diagnosing transmission concerns.
Use the Diagnostic Flow Chart as a guide and follow the steps as indicated.
Preliminary Inspection
  • Know and understand the customer's concern.
  • Verify the concern by operating the vehicle.
  • Check the fluid levels and condition.
  • Check for non-factory add-on items.
  • Check shift linkages for proper adjustment.
  • Check TSBs and OASIS messages regarding the concern.
Diagnostics
  • Carry out on-board diagnostic procedures key on engine off (KOEO) and key on engine running (KOER).
  • Record all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Repair all non-transmission codes first.
  • Repair all transmission codes second.

Hi Jimi , There are very specific diagnostic procedures to follow for diagnosing this system. First a good visual inspection of the transfer case an fluid level an wiring connections. The transfer case shift control module is equipped with the ability to store diagnostic information, which is useful to a technician in the event of module, component or wiring failures. This information can be retrieved from the transfer case shift control module by way of flash codes, which are displayed on the three transfer case shift control switch buttons. These buttons are located on the instrument panel to the right of the steering wheel Before obtaining DTCs, perform the following transfer case control module (TCCM) Self-Test.
TCCM Self-Test
  1. Observe the transfer case shift control switch indicators while turning the ignition switch to RUN. A properly operating system will flash all indicators and then will return to the current gear. If the system is operating normally, then proceed to Displaying Codes.
  2. If the TCCM failed the Self-Test, then test the following circuits.
  3. ?€¢
    Battery Positive Voltage (40 and 1640), and Ignition 3 Voltage for battery voltage

    Ground Circuit for ground

    Diagnostic enable circuit for an open or high resistance

    Transfer case shift control switch connector

  4. If the above circuits are normal but the TCCM still fails the Self-Test, replace the TCCM. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement .
DTC Displaying
  1. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect PIN 13 on the data link cable (DLC) to a ground. The DLC is located in the cab under the instrument panel on the driver's side.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Observe the transfer case shift control switch select buttons for flashing codes. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List .
Important: If the transfer case shift control switch buttons all blink only once and then stop, no fault codes are stored in the transfer case shift control module.

When one DTC is stored in memory, that code will blink that number of times followed by a 3 second pause and then repeat.

If more than one code is stored, the first code will blink, followed by a 3 second pause and then the second code will blink.

This sequence will continue until PIN 13 on the DLC is no longer grounded.

If the TCCM will not communicate the presence or absence of DTCs, test the above circuits in Self-Test Step 2. If the circuits are complete, then replace the TCCM. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement .

service bulletins, illustrations, etc. To diagnose a 2000 or 2001 1.5L Accent Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1128 (FUEL SYSTEM LEAN -- PART LOAD), check the following:
  • Check the intake system for air leaks.
  • Check that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor (P/N 28164-22610) operation meets the specifications listed below. If the MAF sensor output is significantly lower than the reference value (10% or more), then replace the MAF sensor.

What do these codes mean E31-E41-E74-F31? can you help?


E31 = Shorted MAP cicuit sensor
E41 = Cam sensor circuit problem
E74 = Intermittent MAT

F31 = Display panels to BCM problem

This is to say if the vehicle is a 1991 Cadillac Deville
Then the Trouble Codes are as I listed above.
For future reference, the F is for BCM codes.

When entering the on screen diagnostics the display starts with one E for the PCM history, then E.E. for current. Same sequence follows for BCM codes starting with one F for history and F.F. for current ones

Security Lamp Illuminated on the IP, Engine Stalls, No Start, DTC B2960 (Security System Sensor Data Incorrect but Valid) Set (Inspect and Repair Cause of DTC B2960)
1999-2001 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Pickup and Utility Models (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL)

This bulletin is being revised to add information on inspecting for electrical intermittent conditions and important connector C201 tightening steps. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-08-56-002 (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition
Some customers may comment on the following conditions. These symptoms may be intermittent.

• Security lamp illuminates while driving. The Security lamp may be On or Off when the customer brings the vehicle to the service facility.

• The engine cranks but will not start and the Security lamp is flashing.

• The engine starts then stalls and the Security lamp is flashing.

Cause
Condition(s) may be due to an incorrect Passlock™ sensor voltage received by the body control module (BCM) from the Passlock™ sensor due to the following conditions. Most intermittent conditions are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring.

• A 7 ohm variation in the sensor ground circuit wiring, circuit 1057

• A 100 ohm variation in the Passlock™ sensor signal wiring circuit, circuit 1836

Inspect for the following items:

• Broken wiring inside the insulation.

• A poor connection between the male and female terminal at the connector. Refer to Testing for Proper Terminal Contact under Testing for Intermittent and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems for the specific procedure.

• A poor terminal to wire connection. Some conditions that fall under this description include poor crimps, poor solder joints, crimping over the wire insulation instead of the wire itself, and corrosion in the wire to terminal contact area.

• Wire insulation that is rubbed through. This causes an intermittent short as the bare area touches other wiring or parts of the vehicle.

• A poor connection between the male and female terminal at a connector. This poor connection may be the result of contamination or deformation.

- Contamination may be caused by the connector halves being improperly connected. A missing or damaged connector seal, damage to the connector itself, or exposing the terminals to moisture and dirt can also cause contamination. Contamination, usually in the underhood or underbody connectors, leads to terminal corrosion, causing an open circuit or intermittently open circuit.

• Separate the connector halves.

• Visually inspect the connector halves for contamination. Contamination may result in a white or green build-up within the connector body or between terminals. This causes high terminal resistance, intermittent contact, or an open circuit. An underhood or underbody connector that shows signs of contamination should be replaced in its entirety including the terminals, the seals, and the connector body.

- Deformation is caused by probing the mating side of a connector terminal without the proper adapter, improperly joining the connector halves, or repeatedly separating and joining the connector halves. Deformation, usually to the female terminal connector tang, can result in poor terminal contact causing an open or intermittently open circuit. Using an equivalent male terminal from the J 38125-B, test that the retention force is significantly different between an good terminal and a suspect terminal. Replace the female terminal in question.

Correction
Have any of the following components had service recently?

• The BCM

• The ignition lock cylinder case assembly

• The PCM/VCM

If any of the above components have been replaced, the Programming Theft Deterrent System Components procedure must be performed before any diagnostic procedures are performed.

To assist in diagnosis, the following steps are provided.

Does the engine start? If not, use the Engine Cranks but Does Not Run diagnostic information in the Engine Controls sub-section of the applicable Service Manual.
Important:

• The Security telltale on the message center is controlled by the vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system and the content theft deterrent (CTD) system. The Security telltale is controlled by the BCM through the Class 2 data line.

• The VTD system portion of the BCM controls the Security telltale when the ignition switch is in the On position. The VTD system uses the Security telltale as a malfunction indicator.

• The CTD system portion of the BCM controls the Security telltale when the ignition switch is in the Off position. The CTD system uses the Security telltale to identify system status.


Observe the Security indicator lamp in the instrument panel.
Remove the key from the lock cylinder.
- Security indicator should be Flashing when the door is open.

- Security indicator should be Off when all the doors are closed.

- If the Security indicator does not come On or go Off correctly, refer to the Content Theft Deterrent System diagnostic and repair information in the applicable Service Manual.

With the Doors closed, place the key in the lock cylinder and turn to the Run position. Observe the Security indicator lamp.
- Lamp is On and does not go Off however, the engine starts. This indicates that the VTD system detected a fault when the engine was running.

- Lamp flashes On and Off. This indicates a problem has been detected by the VTD (Passlock™) system and the engine may not start this key cycle, a current condition.

Important: You must diagnose the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the order specified in the DTC table shown below. Failure to do so may result in one or more of the following conditions:


• Extended diagnostic time

• Incorrect diagnosis

• Incorrect parts replacement

If none of the above items are true, proceed with the following steps:

Install seat covers.
Connect the scan tool to the diagnostic link connector (DLC).
Enter scan tool diagnostics.
Select the model year of the vehicle.
Select light truck.
Select F1, (Body).
Select "C" or "K" for Series.
Select F0, Body Control Module.
Select F0, (Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)).
Select F0, (DTC information).
Select F0, (Current DTC).
Record on the repair order any current DTCs displayed. If none, skip the next step.
Is a current B2960 DTC displayed? If no, the condition is not present with this key cycle. Continue to the next step.
Select Exit.
Select F1, (History DTC).
Are any history DTCs other than B2960 present? If so, diagnose those DTCs first using the appropriate service information, otherwise continue.
Select Exit.
Select Exit.
Select F1, Data Display.
Select F6, Security.
Cycle the key to the OFF position and wait 20 seconds.
Slowly turn the key to the RUN position. Be careful not to turn the key into the START position.
Observe the following values:
- Passlock™ Data Voltage should be 5.0 volts.

- Passlock™ State should be Normal.

- Passlock™ Code should be Open.

Rotate the key to the START position, and observe the following again:
- Passlock™ Data Voltage should be less than 5.0 volts. Passlock™ Data Voltage should remain steady and not fluctuate. The test vehicle used for this diagnostic procedure had a voltage value of 2.49 volts. The vehicle being worked on may be either higher or lower than this value. The key is that it has to be less than 5.0 volts.

- Passlock™ State should be "Monitor Passlock™".

- Passlock™ Code should be Valid Code.

If no trouble is found and the customer has experienced one of the symptoms or the code is a history DTC, the most likely cause is the VTD (Passlock™) wiring, specifically the wires from the VTD (Passlock™) sensor to the BCM.

IPC stands for Instrument panel control, here is a typical code repair flow chart, this is for example only and has nothing to do with your car..
P083 = 24x signal high.

P107 = Instrument panel control )IPC) to computer (PCM) data problem.

P137 = Loss of Automatic braking system (ABS) to Traction control system (TCS).

What you need to do is CLEAR all these codes from the computer and see which ones return.

Perform this test.

1. Ignition key ON. Engine OFF.

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and WARMER (^) buttons on your climate control panel for 3 seconds and release them.

3. Diagnostic codes such as above will appear with the word HISTORY or CURRENT for each code.

4. The codes will stop when you see PCM?

5. Push and release the HI(^) button and you will see PCM DATA?

6. Push and release the LO(v) button and you will see PCM DATA?

7. Continue to push and release the LO (v) button until you see PCM CLEAR CODES?

8. Push and release the HI(^) button until you see PCM CODES CLEAR.

9. Turn OFF the ignition and wait 3 minutes and try and start the car. If the car starts and the light comes back ON, Turn OFF the car and repeat steps 1 thru 3 and let me know what codes you get and if they are HISTORY or CURRENT.

10. When you see PCM?, Turn OFF ignition key.

Diagnostic Test Modes Without Scan Tool
Two mode options are available under the diagnostic test modes:
  • user mode.
  • diagnosis mode.
The ignition switch is used to alternate from one mode to another.
Diagnosis Mode
The diagnosis mode will display any fault present in the system. The SRS will not enter diagnosis mode if no malfunction is detected.
User Mode to Diagnosis Mode
NOTE: The SRS will not enter diagnosis mode if no fault is detected in user mode.
  1. Ignition switch to ON.
  1. After the air bag warning indicator lights for seven seconds, set ignition switch to OFF within one second.
  1. Wait more than three seconds.
  1. Repeat steps 1 through 3 three times.
  1. Ignition switch to ON.
Diagnosis Mode to User Mode — After Repair
  1. Ignition switch to OFF for at least one second.
  1. Ignition switch to ON.
Diagnosis Mode to User Mode — During Diagnosis
NOTE: If switch from Diagnosis Mode to User Mode is required while diagnosing a fault, carry out the following procedure.
  1. Ignition switch to ON.

Clearing Lamp Fault Codes
NOTE: Lamp fault codes must be cleared from memory before proving out the system.
NOTE: When a new RCM is installed, the air bag warning indicator will operate in user mode. Switching to diagnosis mode is not required.
To clear lamp fault codes after a repair, carry out the procedure to switch from diagnosis mode to user mode. Once in the user mode, the lamp fault codes will be cleared from memory.
Lamp Fault Codes
If the air bag diagnostic monitor detects a current fault, the fault code will be displayed with a flashing sequence of the air bag indicator. The fault code consists of:
  • A start signal to indicate the beginning of a fault code.
  • A number of flashes indicating the particular code that has been set.
The start signal:
  • begins with two seconds off.
  • two seconds on.
  • off.
  • one second on.
  • two seconds off.
Following the start signal, if any current fault is detected, the fault code will be displayed. The fault code:
  • is a series of half second flashes of the air bag indicator.
  • is followed by the start signal.
The start signal and the code for any current fault will repeat until the ignition is switched off or the air bag diagnostic monitor is switched to the user mode.
Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern by checking the air bag indicator in the instrument cluster. Refer to Prove Out in this section.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage using the following chart.

Air bag Indicator flashed and than stays on


If the only code 52 is flashing then system is ok and just needs to be cleared.Look behind the glove box and find the gray 2 wire connector.It will be on the left side behind the glove box and follow the proceedure below. Once a fault has been serviced, the associated diagnostic trouble code may be cleared from NVM. Only diagnostic trouble codes that the air bag diagnostic monitor sees as repaired or intermittent may be cleared (diagnostic trouble codes 52 and above). In no circumstances can hard fault conditions (diagnostic trouble codes 45 and below) be cleared.
  1. Follow the diagnostic procedures as outlined to service the fault condition flashing on the air bag indicator.
  1. Cycle the ignition switch to OFF and then to RUN.
  1. Observe air bag indicator prove-out (six ±two seconds) followed by diagnostic trouble code (52-85) flashing completely one time.
  1. Locate the Diagnostic Service Connector located underneath the glove compartment containing Circuits 631 (T/R) and 57 (BK).
  1. Use a jumper wire to short Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 57 (BK) or to another good ground.
  1. Hold short until air bag diagnostic monitor tone sounds (approximately five seconds).
  1. Release short on Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 57 (BK). Diagnostic trouble code is now cleared from NVM. Next highest priority diagnostic trouble code stored in NVM (if one exists) will begin flashing

Try clearing the codes & see if it returns. I do not see a code fault 10. Starts at 12.

Normal Operation
The air bag diagnostic monitor (14B056) continually checks the air bag system for readiness. When a fault condition is detected, the DTC associated with that fault is stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor's Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM). After writing the DTC to NVRAM, the air bag diagnostic monitor signals the fault by flashing the appropriate diagnostic trouble code on the air bag indicator. The diagnostic trouble code written to NVRAM is permanently stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor until cleared by the diagnostic trouble code clearing procedure.
  • Upon each cycle of the ignition switch (11572) , the air bag diagnostic monitor checks for diagnostic trouble codes written in NVRAM. If any diagnostic trouble codes exist in NVRAM, the air bag diagnostic monitor will then check to see if these fault conditions are still present.
  • If the conditions of the diagnostic trouble code in NVRAM are still present, then the air bag diagnostic monitor will use the air bag indicator to flash out the diagnostic trouble code number that was written in memory.
  • If the conditions of the diagnostic trouble code are not still present (indicating an intermittent or serviced fault), the air bag diagnostic monitor will use the air bag indicator to flash out a DTC which is the sum of the diagnostic trouble code in NVRAM plus 40.
Example: Due to corrosion, high resistance develops on the driver side air bag circuit. The air bag diagnostic monitor stores a diagnostic trouble code 32 in NVRAM. Upon each cycle of the ignition switch , the air bag diagnostic monitor checks the resistance of the driver air bag circuit.
  • If the resistance is still high, the air bag diagnostic monitor causes the air bag indicator to flash out a DTC 32.
  • If the resistance falls within the normal range due to service or an intermittent condition, the air bag diagnostic monitor causes DTC 72 to be flashed on the air bag indicator.
Once a fault has been serviced, the associated diagnostic trouble code may be cleared from NVRAM. Only diagnostic trouble codes that the air bag diagnostic monitor sees as repaired or intermittent may be cleared (diagnostic trouble codes 52 and above). In no circumstances can hard fault conditions (diagnostic trouble codes 45 and below) be cleared.
  1. Follow the diagnostic procedures as outlined to service the fault condition flashing on the air bag indicator.
  1. Cycle the ignition switch to OFF and then to RUN.
  1. Observe air bag indicator prove-out (six ± two seconds) followed by diagnostic trouble code (52-85) flashing completely one time.
  1. Locate the Diagnostic "Trouble Code Clear" Connector located underneath the glove compartment (06010) containing Circuits 631 (T/R) and 57 (BK).
  1. Use a jumper wire to short Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 57 (BK) or to another good ground. This short must be made after the diagnostic trouble code flashes completely one time, but before the warning light stays on continuously.
  1. Hold short until air bag diagnostic monitor tone sounds (approximately five seconds).
  1. Release short on Circuit 631 (TAN/RED STRIPE) to Circuit 57 (BLACK). This short must be released within 25 seconds after the diagnostic monitor tone sounds. Diagnostic trouble code is now cleared from NVRAM. Next highest priority diagnostic trouble code stored in NVRAM (if one exists) will begin flashing.
