the marks for th cams are on the tin stuff behind the gears study it for a bit and nyoull see them the mark for the crank pully is on the case onthe bottom of the crank pully just of to one side

How to change the drive belt


One assumes the reference here is to the timing belt running hidden under a cover on the passenger side of the engine and NOT one of the external belts that drive the alternator, AC pump and power steering pump.

The timing belt requires precision installation. Its typically a full day task for an experienced mechanic with air tools. Precision installation first requires precision removal and preparation. To access the timing belt remove the passenger front wheel and the center sections only of the wheel well liner that expose view to side of engine. Then loosen tensioner bolts on external belts and remove external belts from the center main drive sheave. They can hang on the remote drive sheaves if desired. Remove upper and lower external covers from timing belt. Using old cloth, wipe the back-wall of the timing enclosure clean of dust and check for oil or coolant leaks. Find yellow chalk or Yellow lumber marking crayon. Look very carefully with bright light for timing marks on anything that rotates and for corresponding mark. At TDC of cylinder 1 all observable marks should simultaneously align. Cylinder 1 is on the rear engine bank closest to passenger seat. Rotate engine manually with battery disconnected and ignition off until alignment of all marks observed. Only then do you release the tensioner and remove the old timing belt. While the timing belt is removed is an excellent time to replace the cooling water pump. There is no timing mark on the water pump, only on the sheaves that drive the camshafts and on the main drive sheave. Also no timing marks on the idler pulleys.

Once the new belt is installed with everything verified in proper alignment and new water pump installed too, the idler pulleys can be set and spring loaded. Then manually rotate the engine through one complete cycle until all marks aligned again. Check torque on all bolts, then start reassembly of timing belt shield first, then external belts and adjust tensioners. Reinstall center wheel well liner sections and then reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts.

Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle. If all properly aligned it will immediately start. If anything improperly aligned, you now have BIG problem and likely permanent engine damage. Alignment of the timing belt rollers and sheaves absolutely critical, one omission and the engine is toast. Do it right and enjoy another 60K miles before you have to change the Kia timing belt yet again.

Procedure - Timing Belt replacement.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

2. Remove the timing belt cover. Remove the injection pump sprocket flange.

3. Using a prybar, remove the tension spring from the timing belt tensioner.

When removing the tension spring, avoid using excessive force for the spring may become distorted.

4. Remove the tensioner pulley bolt and the pulley.

5. Remove the timing belt and discard it.

To install:

6. Rotate the crankshaft to bring the No. 1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke.

7. Align the timing marks on the injection pump sprocket with the camshaft sprocket; the marks must be facing each other.

8. Using a new timing belt, install it in the following sequence: crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket and the injection pump sprocket; the slack must be between the injection pump and camshaft sprockets.

9. Install the tension center and the tension pulley so the end of the tension center is fitted against both pins on the timing pulley housing.

10. Hand tighten the nut so the tension pulley can be rotated freely.

11. Install the tension spring and semi-tighten the pulley nut to 22-36 ft. lbs. (30-48 Nm).

12. Rotate the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise to seat the belt and further turn the crankshaft 90° beyond TDC to settle the injection pump.

13. Loosen the tension pulley nut to take up the timing belt slack. Tighten the tension pulley nut to 79-94 ft. lbs. (108-128 Nm).

14. Install the injection pump sprocket flange; the hole in the outer circumference of the flange should be aligned with the triangular timing mark on the injection pump sprocket.

15. Rotate the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise to bring the No. 1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke. Make sure the triangular timing mark on the timing sprocket is aligned with the hole in the flange, then, measure the timing belt tension; it should be 33-55 lbs.

16. Install the timing belt cover.

17. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hi ive got a 1996 isuzu bighorn ive attempted to change the timing belt but the injector pump pulley moved when i took the belt off. i put it back where i thort it was and tried a tooth either way but no...


Timing belt installation

1. Ensure locking bolts located correctly [4] & [5] in the picture below:

2. Ensure timing marks aligned [10].
3. Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket.

NOTE: "ISUZU" lettering on belt should be readable from front of engine.

4. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [9]. Push tensioner pulley against belt.
5. Ensure belt is taut between injection pump sprocket and tensioner pulley as well as crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
6. Position tensioner lever [8] against tensioner pulley housing.
7. Remove locking bolts from sprockets [4] & [5].
8. Apply a load of 10 ... 12 kg to tensioner lever. Use spring balance [11].
9. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to 80 Nm.
10. Turn crankshaft slowly 45 degrees anti-clockwise. Use spring balance to tension belt.
11. Repeat tensioning procedure at 45 degrees intervals for one anti-clockwise turn of the crankshaft.

NOTE: DO NOT turn crankshaft clockwise during tensioning procedure!

12. Fit tensioner lever to original position. Tighten nuts [12].
13. Install: Injection Pump flange [6], Camshaft sprocket flange [7], and water pump pulley.
14. Install components in reverse order of removal & refill coolant.

I found a 2.0L VW engine for a Cabrio. Not sure if this is the right one, but here goes:

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

NOTE: Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt
removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts,
    crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s).
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to
    TDC of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with
    the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the distributor cap removed, the rotor should be pointing toward the
    No. 1 mark on the rim of the distributor housing. On 8 valve engines, the notch
    on the crankshaft pulley should align with the dot on the intermediate shaft
    sprocket.
  4. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner
    counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt.
  5. Slide the timing belt from the sprockets.
    To install:

  6. Check the alignment of the timing marks. On 16 valve engines, the mark on
    the tooth should align with the mark on the rear belt cover.
  7. Install the new timing belt and tension the belt so it can be twisted 90°at
    the middle of it's longest section, between the camshaft and intermediate
    sprockets.
  8. Recheck the alignment of the timing marks and, if correct, turn the engine 2
    full revolutions to return to TDC of No. 1 piston. Recheck belt tension and
    timing marks. Readjust as required. Torque the tensioner nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45
    Nm).
  9. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
  10. If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and
    falls with engine speed.


Diesel Engines

Some special tools are required. A flat bar, VW tool no. 2065A, is used to
secure the camshaft in position. A pin, VW tool no. 2064, is used to fix the
pump position while the timing belt is removed. The camshaft and pump work
against spring pressure and will move out of position when the timing belt is
removed. It is not difficult to find substitutes but do not remove the timing
belt without these tools.
NOTE: Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt
removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts,
    crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s). Remove the camshaft cover and
    rubber plug at the back end of the camshaft.
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to
    TDC of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with
    the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the engine at TDC, insert the bar into the slot at the back of the
    camshaft. The bar rests on the cylinder head to will hold the camshaft in
    position.
  4. Insert the pin into the injection pump drive sprocket to hold the pump in
    position.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner
    counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Slide the timing
    belt from the sprockets.
    To install:

  6. Install the new timing belt and adjust the tension so the belt can be
    twisted 45 degrees at a point between the camshaft and pump sprockets. Torque
    the tensioner nut to 33 ft. (45 Nm).
  7. Remove the holding tools.
  8. Turn the engine 2 full revolutions to return to TDC of No. 1 piston. Recheck
    belt tension and timing mark alignment, readjust as required.
  9. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
  10. If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and
    falls with engine speed.

Where can i find timing marks for cam and injection pump for 4jg2 engine?


Hi, no marks as such, but with the crank marks lined up to TDC No/1 if you look at the cam pulley and the pump pulley you should see a hole in both at about 2o'clock position, these holes should line up with corresponding holes of which you screw a bolt in each ( I think they are 8mm metric ) by doing this the bolts hold both pulleys in the correct position with crank marks aligned, cheers hope that helps

Remove and install diesel fuel injector


First, keep everything as clean as possible. Contamination below 30 microns, which cannot be seen by humans, can destory a diesel fuel injection system. Clean everything off anything having to do with connections on the fuel system and cover any connections left open.

Begin by removing the intake manifold. This will remove the clips holding the injection lines passing underneath and around the intake runners. After removing the manifold, cover the openings in the cylinder head (I use wadded-up paper towels).

Next, remove the clips at the brackets on the injection lines closer to the injectors.

Loosen all of the injection connections at the injectors. Do not remove the lines.

You can remove the water crossover tube if it is in your way, but drain about a 1/2 gallon of coolant before your remove the crossover.

Remove the oil fill tube from the timing cover. Turn the engine clockwise, using a 15/16" socket and ratchet (or breaker bar) on the center bolt of the crankshaft. As you turn the engine over, a bolt will show up at the opening where the oil fill tube was removed. Remover the bolt and keep turning the engine over until you have removed all three bolts. Do NOT use the starter to turn the engine over and, after removing the third bolt, do NOT turn the crankshaft any more.

On top of the timing cover, behind the rounded top, is the place where the injection pump is bolted to the cover from the back side. Clean the top of the timing cover where it meets the injection pump and look for a thin line scribed into the cover and one on the injection pump. Note the position of the two lines (they are usually aligned) for reassembly.

Remove the throttle cable assembly from the injection pump. Remove all the wires from the pump and note which connection the big pink wire goes to. The other wires will be green. Remove the return hose at the top of the injection pump.

There are three nuts holding the injection pump to the timing cover and you will need a 15mm socket and/or wrench to remove them. When you do, the injection pump and injection lines can be removed as a unit. Note the position of the driveshaft of the injection pump to set the new one the same way. If you are not going to put things back together right away, cut up a plastic garbage bag and make covers for the injectors. Secure the covers with rubber bands or nylon cable ties to keep dirt out of the injectors.

Carefully transfer the injection lines to the new pump. It is possible to cross them up so pay close attention while moving the lines. Transfer the fuel inlet pipe to the new pump and whatever device is mounted on the passenger side of the old injection pump to the new pump.

Get a new injection pump to timing cover gasket and install it over the timing cover studs. Install the new injection pump after setting the driveshaft to match the holes in the gear inside the timing cover. The pump can only be installed one way since it is indexed to the gear. Reinstall the nuts on the studs and set the timing marks to the same position they were when you removed the old injection pump (the lines on top of the timing cover and the flange of the injection pump). Tighten the mounting nuts. Make sure that all the injection lines line up at their injectors, but do not tighten the connections at the injectors yet.

Put the first bolt back into the gear through the oil fill tube hole. Hand tighten it and then turn the crankshaft clockwise as before to install the remaining two bolts. Then, tighten all the bolts securely and resinstall the oil fill tube. Reinstall the throttle connections on the injection pump.

Install a new piece of 1/4" fuel line from the fuel filter to the injection pump (the old one is usuall brittle since it never gets changed). Remove the covers over the opening in the cylinders heads and reinstall the intake manifold using new gaskets.

Reinstall all the injection line clips that were removed and the coolant crossover tube (if you removed it and don't forget to add coolant to the radiator). Reconnect all the wiring on the injection pump, except for the big pink wire. Install a piece of clear tubing on the top of the injection pump and connect it to the return tee in front of it (where you removed the rubber hose from the old injection pump).

Now comes the fun part: Disconnect the glow plug relay connector (two small wires in a connector) from the middle of the relay. The relay is usually on the driver's fender and close to the battery.

Crank the engine, in short bursts, until you see fuel in the clear tubing on top of the injection pump. When you do, reconnect the big pink wire on the injection pump. Continue to crank the engine in short bursts (allowing the starter to rest between cranking cycles) until you see fuel dripping out of the injection lines at the injectors. When you do, tighten the connections where fuel is dripping. When all lines have been tightened, reconnect the glow plug relay connector. Remove the clear tubing on top of the injection pump and reinstall the fuel line that was removed from that location.

Then, try starting the engine normally. If it will not start, try some WD-40 down the intake. You can use ether, but you MUST disable the glow plugs be removing the connector at the relay.

The engine may run rough or stall at first but it should smooth out after all the remaining air comes out of the system.

Torque values are as follows:

Intake manifold: 25-37 ft-lbs
Gear bolts: 13-20 ft-lbs
Injection pump mounting nuts: 25-37 ft-lbs
Injection lines: 15-24 ft-lbs ("wrench tight" is fine)
Injection pump fuel inlet fitting: 15-20 ft-lbs

Things You'll Need: · Set of quarter-inch drive sockets Quarter-inch drive ratchet Set of half-inch drive sockets Half-inch drive air gun Set of metric wrenches Special tools for holding camshaft timing #2065-A and injection pump #2064

Step 1

Remove the accessory drive belts and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Remove the upper timing belt cover and the valve cover. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the No.1 cylinder is atop, dead center, with the flywheel timing marks aligned.

Step 2

Install the special tool setting bar (#2065-A) on the rear of the camshaft. If it does not fit, turn the crankshaft once more and line up the timing marks again in the hole of the transmission housing.

Step 3

Insert locking pin #2064 into the injection pump to hold it in position. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut and allow the tensioner to move away from the belt. Loosely tighten the nut to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the top guide pulley and the timing belt.

Step 4

Make sure that the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up and that the camshaft setting bar and injection locking pin are in place. Loosen the camshaft bolt a half turn and tap the sprocket with a soft mallet to loosen it off its taper. The sprocket should move freely. Install the top guide pulley and torque to 18 foot pounds of torque.

Step 5

Install the new timing belt, starting on the right side and working counterclockwise. Keep the tension on the right nontensioned side. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut. Using the two-pin wrench, turn the tensioner pulley clockwise until the notch and raised mark are aligned. Torque the tensioner pulley nut to 15 foot pounds of torque. Make sure the flywheel timing mark is still aligned.

Step 6

Torque the camshaft bolt to 33 foot pounds of torque. Remove the locking pin from the injection pump and remove the camshaft setting bar. Turn the crankshaft two turns and check the alignment on the flywheel. Make sure that the setting bar can be inserted easily and that the injection pump locking pin can be inserted. Install all components in reverse order of removal and torque the crankshaft bolt to 18 foot pounds of torque.

My Recommendation - Pay an authorized VW mechanic $500 to replace the timing belt water pump an tensioner, and sleep better knowing that the job was done right.   3. Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
  4. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
  5. Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
  6. Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
  7. Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
  8. NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.
