Hello, my name is Eddie and I live in St. Louis MO. I purchased my 04 Jag X type in March of 2013 and it is Feb 2014. I have had an instance, maybe 8-9 months ago, where I'm driving normally and I slow down at a light. A "gearbox fault" & a "transmission systems fault" light come on and the car idles high and will not accelerate. I turn the car off and back on it idles high and does not accelerate again. Happens 1-2 more times. I restart the car again and as if nothing happened it drives normal. Neglecting the CEL that comes on and off periodically after that I push it off until "warmer weather." It wasn't a problem until recently, but this time in 5 miles of driving it happens 3-4x!!! I take it to Jaguar on Olive in Creve Cour Missouri and they barely diagnose it as a throttle body issue(6-7months ago). Now that the problem has increased I decide to unplug the battery and clean out the throttle body w a throttle body and carb. cleaner. I drive it to test it out again, SAME PROBLEM!!!! The throttle body is clean (I'm assuming) could it be a TPS or some other sensors around it? Should I just replace the throttle body or what? I obviously want this problem to go away but would also like the cheapest route available (at least to begin w/) are there any remedies or things I can do before I make a costly decision? I've been reading the reviews and there are problems similar but not any that are 100%exact. Thank you VERYYYY much! -Eddie

It is going to be your TPS. I have a 04 a type r that had that exact problem. The only problem is they do not just sell the sensor by itself. The quick and easy fix is to loosen the tps and turn it sligty as and tighten it back up.
Most common cause is a worn clutch ,but obvious your american and not used to manual gearboxes as their is a knack for this and that is lift clutch a bit as you pull it into reverse or if the fault is in the gearbox stop the engine put in reverse and restart engine ,also select reverse more slowly ,ever seen inside a gearbox and how the reverse works ? lots of extreme pressure on the changing mechanism .
i had the same problem with my s-type, when i went to jaguar dealer for diagnostic and they told me it was trans problem, need new trans and will cost me $4500 to fix it, so i think you will be better off looking for a salvage trans to put it in your car, it will cost you around $1500-$2500 including labor. i hope that will help some of you with gear box fault massage. oh try and find some one who knows a lot about jaguar before you send the car for trans repairs.
Replace transmission and sell quickly. I bought 2001 s-type in October 2008. I have not been able to drive it. 1st thing was gearbox fault message which turned out to be transmission. Ford can rebuild cheaper. Next thing to happen was all seals needed replacing. Then all coils needed to be replaced. Coils keep going out. Needs new computer which has 8 year/80000 mile warranty on, but Jag would not honor ($3000). Needless to say my pretty jag sits in the driveway. Had to get another car. Went with Lincoln LS V8. GREAT car!
unfortunately when that code, and that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independent shops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.
My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away.
Hello astra....Un fortunately the oldes S-Types do suffer from this.....If you dont want to chance a new gearbox,ya gotta live with it ..As long as you have your foot on the brake its ok so sit at the lights while in D
