Question about 2001 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi
Will normally take off with no problems but sometimes when shifting from first to second it will slip a little. while driving it will act like it is in neutral and I will have to pull off the road and put it in park or neutral and let it sit for a minute or two. when I start it back up it will shift normally for a while then act like it is in neutral again and I will have to pull over and turn off the engine and let it sit as before and it will be fine till the next time.doesn't matter if it is hot or cold.

My car did the same thing. Look on your Transmission and find the speed sensor. Take the speed sensor out. It should only require taking off one nut. Then pull it out, the speed sensor is magnetic and can often times collect metal chips on it and that makes it unable to work properly. Once you clean it your car will be able to shift down properly because the speed sensor affects when your car shifts. Try it out. Good luck.

Sounds like the filter might be plugging up. I would have it serviced. Do you have a check engine light on? How long do you have to leave the engine off before it will start moving again?

SOURCE: When I try to shift
Is it only when you go from park to reverse? Or is it just as bad going from neutral to reverse? I've noticed on mine that it's often tight if I park on even a slight slope. If it only happens when going from park to reverse, try this. Hold your foot on the brake, and put the car in drive. Keeping constant pressure on the brake, go back to park, then back into drive. Did you feel the stiffness when you had your foot on the brake?
