SOURCE: 1999 Dodge Caravan posts trouble
The p1698 code is for the (bus) that is how the computers commmunicate with each other and also how the scan tool talks to the computers.
There is a common problem with these vans, that would be a good place to start. The battery will leak acid onto the wires underneath the battery. If you remove the battery and battery tray you will be able to see the large wiring harness under the battery. Inspect all of the wires underneath the battery for damage.

SOURCE: had check engine light come
Is your Jeep dashboard display operating faultlessly?
P1698 code is an electronic communication error code.
The engine computer is getting intermittent or no signal from the transmission control model (TCM)
The first stage of the communication is a dim or flicker display on the gear selector,
I recommend do it yourself to do the following before bring it to the shop.
With engine off and cold.
1) clean both battery connector to rule out back contacts.
2)check the voltage of the battery
12,6V or higher with engine off 13.6V or higher with engine at idle
With engine running, turn on all headlights,AC,radio and fans to load test the alternator and idle air control motor. The idle should increase be 100-150 rpm depend on engine temperature. The voltage reading should increase as you add load,
3) inspect for loose ground wiring and grounding strap(s). Make sure engine is off and cold before you start the inspection.
I recommend you start from the fuse box area and work outward.
Check for white power under electrical cabling.
Check for loose connections.
The following are for above average DIY'er only.
I recommend you to let the connectors dry overnight before re-starting.
Use plastic and cotton cloth to catch excessive drips.
4) clean ECU and TCU connectors with small amount of PB Blaster spray. DO NOT DISCONNECT the main connector to the ECU.
Key code lock out information is store in the ECU. Disruption of 12V power will trigger the security system and preventing the engine from starting.
Do you best to spray small amount of PB Blaster into wiring connecting blocks and contacts (not going to be visible)
To sum it up,CODE P1698 is lack of control timing signal from the transmission TCM.
You task is to rule out all possible electrical connection intermittent connection and dirty contact.
Please email me update on your fix.

Transmission control module failure. very common failure. On the transaxle right on the front when you open your hood . That module has been updated. That is the one that failed. before you replace it look along the wire leading from it is it disconnected did battery corrosion from the terminal corrode it, .That is where communication to the transmission control takes place
