SOURCE: 1997 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch Replacement

take off the cover on the top and bottom of the steering column just behind the wheel. pop the tilt lever out simply just by grabbing it and give it a good tug. then once you have the new switch and you get in there your going to need an inverted torx socket to remove the small bolts that hold the switch to the column. do not move the gear on the new switch make sure it lines up exactly as the old one did!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exploded view of the ignition and key alarm switch

  1. Remove the column shroud halves.
  2. Remove the column-to-dash attaching bolts and slowly lower the steering column, making sure that it is supported.
  3. Remove the multi function switch if necessary.
  4. Remove the key alarm switch, if equipped by gently prying the alarm switch retaining clip with a small screwdriver. Rotate the alarm switch 1/4 in. turn and remove.
WARNING Extreme care is necessary to prevent damage to the collapsible column.

  1. Make sure that the switch is in the Lock position. If the lock cylinder is out, pull the switch rod up to the stop, then go down one detent.
  2. Disconnect the actuating rod from the switch.
  3. Remove the two screws and the switch.
To install:
  1. Before installation, make sure the switch is in the Lock position.
  2. Attach the actuating rod to the switch.
  3. Install the switch using the original screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch. lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  4. Install the key alarm switch, if equipped . Make sure the retaining clip is parallel to the lock cylinder. Rotate the alarm switch 1/4 in. turn until locked in place.
  5. Install the multi function switch if removed.
CAUTION Use of screws that are too long could prevent the column from collapsing on impact.

  1. Replace the column. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm); the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  2. Install the column shroud halves.

I have a 2008 gmc sierra 1500 series and it turns on but i can't get it to shut off?

I think I would try a new ignition switch or at least unplug the switch after the engine is running and see if it stops running. When you initiate a start, a series of relays turn on in the powerbox. If the ignition relay is melted inside itself, it will not break connection. You can research and get diagrams, videos, and photos on the Web. Just be specific and enter the year, make, and model and ask for a wiring diagram or fusebox or powerbox for that truck. Then chose from the results.

You should be able to identify the correct relay from the diagrams. Relays are not terribly expensive.

Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
Observe the SECURITY telltale. After approximately 10 minutes , the telltale will turn OFF. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password XXXXX the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
Start the engine, the vehicle has now learned the password.

PS: Your owners manual should also provide you with useful information on your security system functions and programing.

2004 gmc sierra acts like the key is in the ignition when its not, the warning bell goes off+the doors wont lock ,like the key is in the ignition

sounds like either key in cylinder contacts are bad or the 2 wires going up column to the switch are pinched together.

I need instructions on how to change out the ignition switch on a 2004 gmc 1500 pickup truck

Hello Steve...The lock cylinder will come out if you can turn the ignition switch. You have to remove the bezel around the steering colunm, the plastic trim behind the steering wheel. There is a small hole on top of the ignition lock housing, you need to turn the ignition to the run position, move the shifter to drive(so the starter does not enegage) use a small pick to push in the small hole and turn the ignition to the start position. The lock cylinder should now slide out.
I will post a schematic.
You do not need to remove the steering wheel.

Happy Holidays...good luck, i hope this helps, please rate me a fixya.

I am looking for a wire on my 2004 gmc sierra 1500 that will turn on and off with the key

for what? There is an ignition wire for you radio, but there are many other ignition power wires. Fuse box also is a good place to find an ignition power source, a $3 tester will tell you. I guess it just depends on what your trying to do.
