Have a wheel alignment done
check for dragging brake on that side.
check for under-inflated tyre
check for failing bearings

My 2004 mazda mpv jerks to the left then straightens back out. This usually happens when I have to accelerate really fast or right about the time it shifts into the last gear.

Mike, this may be because the left wheel is the dominate drive axle (left axle locks up and pulls hard, while right side slips) when under power. Vehicles that do not have possie drive differentials have this pulling characteristic.

When driving 40mph let go of steering wheel car pulls to the left ,2002 toyota avalon

Try flipping the front tires right to left and so on car may have a radial pull road test to see if it goes right or strait (first check tire pressure )

'99 Saturn pulls to left while driving.

You might have a L/F brake caliper slide sticking intermittently. I would try rotating the tires from side to side and see if the car pulls to the right, if it still pulls to the left then you have definitively ruled out the tires as the cause. You could have an alignment issue, like a bad left outer tie rod end and/or ball joints that have play in them and they will move around inside their joints causing them to change your alignment angles intermittently. It is also possible and not unheard of to have the left front wheel bearing hub go out as well, and with a bearing starting to bind internally will cause it to slow down that wheel slightly which causes a pull. I would take it to a Chevy dealer rather than an independent shop only because these cars are just like a Chevy Cavalier and the techs will know a lot more than an independent shop.
I hope this info helps!subyguru

When in 2 wheel drive and accelerating, the car pulls to the right, upon decelerating, it goes left, it would seem to me that I have 3 wheel drive, with the rear nearside wheel still driving. What is the...

Not understanding you 3 wheel drive thing, But I believe that the Xterra are a front wheel drive based engine and if that is the case most front wheel drives will pull to right at excelleration and then to left under letting of excellerator. This is do to engine torque but if it is extensive you may want to check motor mounts.
