2001- I had a right side steering control arm done and also ball joints, a month ago, no queaks at all, now it sqeaks again when I dry slow or make aturn, I was told by a Honda dealer needed struts, the mechanic did the other stuff and said I didn't need struts, but honda said I didm so my daughter wanted to take it to her mechanic, but I did not want to, but she said another opinon would be better, this other mechanic said no, bit I did need a ball joint and steering control arm, but no truts, so I said Ok, but I beleive now I do, Honad has done my card for 7 years soebd 5000.00 from 2007 till 2013, on repairs, so do I need struts?

Use a water hose and try to spray some water from inder the car to the suspension(struts) and drive, see if queaks, or wait until a rainy day and see of queaks. If it stop, you need to replace the rubbers on the base of the springs.

The dealer's answer (if you are interested).......

The ball joint is pressed into the upper control arm and has a tapered stud for attachment to the steering knuckle. The ball joint stud is attached and locked into the steering knuckle using a special nut. The ball joint is a sealed-for-life type and requires no maintenance. If the ball joint is defective it will require replacement of the entire upper control arm.

UPPER CONTROL ARM:

Do not disassemble the upper arm. If the ball joint or bushings are faulty, or the upper arm is damaged, the entire upper arm must be replaced.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Remove the front wheels. Support the lower control arm assembly with a floor jack.
  3. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator tool.
  4. Remove the self-locking nuts from the upper arm anchor bolts. Remove the upper arm from the vehicle.

Do not disassemble the upper arm. If the ball joint or bushings are faulty, or the upper arm is damaged, the entire upper arm must be replaced.
To install:
Use new self-locking nuts when installing the upper arm and strut.
  1. Install the upper control arm assembly into the strut tower.
  2. Connect the upper ball joint.
  3. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  4. With all four of the vehicle's wheels on the ground, torque the upper control arm nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Torque the castle nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm); then, only tighten it enough to install a new cotter pin.
  5. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  6. Check and adjust the vehicle's front end alignment.
The bushings on the front lower control arms are replaceable on most models.
This procedure requires the use of a press and may be above the skill range of the average driveway enthusiast. It is recommended that this procedure be done by a qualified machine shop if you are not skilled in the proper use of a press.
  1. Remove the lower control arm that is in need of new bushings.
It is recommended that both the left and right lower control arm bushings be replaced at the same time. The vehicles handling may become unstable if there are new bushings on one side of the car and worn ones on the other.
  1. Set up the control arm in a press.
  2. Using a impact socket of the correct length and size, press out the old bushing.
  3. Install the new bushing by slowly using the press to push it into the control arm.
  4. WARNINGExcessive force could cause the bushing to bend or tear so be careful.
  5. Once the bushing is properly seated in the control arm, remove the arm from the press and install it on the vehicle.

It looks like if you buy the joint from Chrysler then it comes complete with the arm however there are aftermarket companies that make just the ball joint which can be pressed in and out. It's fairly common for a manufacturer to offer the joint only as a part of the arm while an aftermarket company will offer the ball joint for sale seperately. A hint on these: Buy the best quality ball joint you can get an grease them on a regular basis. Lower ball joints take quite a beating and there is a big quality difference between cheap and good joints.

Keep pulling when i press the gas


If the wheel alignment has been done recently and you haven't hit any major pot holes/curbs check tire pressure first to make sure all are even. You may have a bad tire causing the pull as well. You can rotate the front tires to the back and retest for the pull.If pull is still present, you may have a torque steer issue or steering/suspension problem. Has the ride height been modified? Check font end components ( tie rods/ball joints/control arm bushings for wear ). Make sure you are using a flat road surface to determine the pull. Most engineers design the road crown for water to flow off on the right side so the vehicle will always want to go to the right slightly. Keep this in mind

How to replace left control arm on 99 mercury cougar


Here's what I found on Yahoo answers:
For the driver's side: yes, you will have to raise the motor.
On all models, remove the front motor mount, Mark the position of the right engine mount, remove 3 right engine to mount bolts. remove one right engine mount to body nut. On all models hold the strut shaft with an 8 mm allen wrench, loosen top retaining nut 5 turns. Raise vehicle, remove ball joint to steering knuckle pinch bolt. seperate control arm ball joints from steering knuckle. Do NOT damage ball joint seal. Remove pinch bolt attaching steering knuckle to strut. Slide steering knuckle up on strut, Move transaxle to gain access to control arm nuts and bolts. remove 2 nuts and bolts and attaching control arm to subframe. Lifting up control arm remove.
Now this to mark the motor mount because you are supposed to use a powertrain alignment guage when putting back together. if not you can bind the motor in the unibody and make for a shaky ride.
that drivers side lower control arm calls for 4.3 hours where as the passenger side calls for 1.3 hours. So you can see what your in for.
BTW these instructions are taken straight from the Ford repair manual.

Control arm replace


to replace control arm, you need place jackstands under the frame and lower vechicle so the weight of the vechicle rests on the jackstands and not on the control arms, then remove the front wheel remove ball joint and nut, remove steering knuckle from the lower ball joint using tool KM 507 B. remove control arm to crossmember nut and bolt, remove rear crossmember to body bolt and remove control arm.torque control arm to crossmember nut and bolt 81 ft lbs, torque ball joint to steering knuckle bolt nut 44 ft lbs.torque crossmember to body bolt to 145 ft lbs.

SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT FRONT OF VECHICLE ON JACK STAND MAKE SURE VECHICLE PARKED ON SOLID LEVEL GROUND. REMOVE WHEEL OR TIRE. 1993 f-150 4x4 very hard to turn to the right. I've replace the steering box, pump, and front axle u-joints. When it's off the ground it steers easy. Back on the ground, Hard??


Either ball joints or alignment come to mind.
Ball joints will often bind and grab in one direction but not necessarily in the other, when they are really bad.
You don't notice it jacked up because the control arms pivot down to put you on a different location on the ball joint.
You should be able to see which side and whether upper or lower, by seeing the pressure causing flex and jerks.
Although it is usually either one with a rubber rip or the lowers.
But alignment can do it also, especially of jacked up.
The camber or caster can be too great on one side, where turning the steering has to lift the whole truck up on one side more than the other, or it can strongly pull to one side.

How do you put in a ball joint in a 2001 sebring convertible


It depends on exactly which ball joint of the 3 per side your changing, but here are the details.

COMPRESSION LOWER ARM & LATERAL LOWER ARM ASSEMBLIES
Removal
1. Loosen compression lower arm ball joint nut. Using steering linkage puller, separate ball joint and
knuckle. Remove nut, bolts and compression lower arm assembly. Remove dust cover.
2. Remove stay. Remove shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Loosen lateral lower arm ball
joint and knuckle nut. Using steering linkage puller, separate ball joint and knuckle. Remove nut, bolt and
lateral lower arm assembly. Remove dust cover.
Inspection
Using preload socket, ensure breakaway torque for compression lower arm ball joint is 4-22 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5
N.m) for 2000 models. On 2001 models, breakaway torque is 22-54 INCH lbs. (2.5-6.1 N.m). Ensure
breakaway torque for compression lateral lower arm ball joint is 13 INCH lbs. (1.5 N.m). Check compression
lower arm, lateral lower arm, dust covers, and bushings for damage and wear.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW ball joint nuts. Lubricate lip and inside of dust cover with
multipurpose lubricant. Using installer, install dust cover. Check front wheel alignment.
UPPER ARM ASSEMBLY
Removal
Using steering linkage puller, loosen upper arm ball joint and knuckle nut. Remove self-locking nut. Remove upper arm and upper arm shaft assembly. Remove dust cover.
Inspection
Using preload socket, ensure breakaway torque for upper arm ball joint is 3-13 INCH lbs. (0.3-1.5 N.m).
Replace upper arm assembly when measured value exceeds specification. Check upper arm, dust cover, and
bushings for damage and wear.
Installation
1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW self-locking nuts. Lubricate lip and inside of dust cover
with multipurpose lubricant. Using Ball Joint Installer (MB990800), install dust cover.
2. Ensure upper arm shaft assembly is installed at indicated angle. Verify upper arm shaft
assembly installation. Check front wheel alignment.

Once you have the correct arm off and a replacement joint (if available, some are not serviceable and require the arm to be replaced) then you will need a press or a ball joint press to change the joint. Such as

I have a squeeking noise in the front on both sides i was told it was the controll arms needign to be replaced do we need to do the ball joints as well or do they come with both when replacing


you can either buy bottom suspension arms with the ball koint atached or just replace the ball joints.

If the suspension arms are shot, then you should be able to feel this when driving over cats eyes in the road. when the wheels contact the cats eyes they wonder, the steering wil feel like its going both ways, not tight, kinda lose?

Ball joints dont squeek they knock! most times its just as cheap to get ball joints and suspension arms/control arms as one. some things dont translate that good from UK to Us the parts have different names here, but thats the same part I mean. When you remove ball joints and in most cases you have to when replacing the arms, they get damaged and rarely last long after being put back in place, you may aswell pay now for one lot of labour than pay twice.

How to replace lower left front ball joint ?


Removal & Installation NOTE This procedure requires the use of the following special tools: J 9519-E Lower Ball Joint Remover and Installer, J 34874 Booster Seal Remover/Installer, J 41435 Ball Joint Installer, J 45105-1 Ball Joint Flaring Adapter and J 45105-2 Receiver.

  1. On 4WD vehicles, remove the wheel center cap and drive axle nut.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Tire and wheel
    • Wheel hub and bearing, if necessary
    • Outer tie rod retaining nut
    • Out tie rod from the steering knuckle using a suitable puller
    • Brake hose bracket retaining bolts and bracket
    • Upper control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut
    • Upper control arm from the steering knuckle
    • Lower ball joint retaining nut
    • Steering knuckle from the lower control arm using a suitable ball joint removal tool
    • Steering knuckle from the vehicle
    • Lower ball joint flange with a chisel
  4. Install tools J 9519-E and J 34874 to the lower ball joint, then use those tools to remove the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower ball joint to the lower control arm, using tools J 9519-E, J 41435 and J 45105-2
  2. Remove the tools from the lower control arm.
    • Tools J 9519-E and J 45105-1 to the lower ball joint
  3. Flare the lower ball joint flange with J 9519-E and J 45105-1, then remove the tools from the lower ball joint.
    • Steering knuckle to the lower control arm
    • Lower ball joint retaining nut and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    • Upper control arm to the steering knuckle
    • Upper control arm pinch bolt and nut and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
    • Brake hose bracket to the steering knuckle
    • Brake hose bracket retaining nuts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
    • Outer tie rod to the steering knuckle
    • Outer tie rod retaining nut and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
    • Wheel hub and bearing, if removed
    • Tire and wheel
  4. Lower the vehicle
    • Drive axle nut, if 4WD, and tighten to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm)
    • Wheel center cap, if removed
  5. Check the front wheel alignment.
