Question about Cars & Trucks
My 1996 grand prix gtp 3.4L needs a new ac compressor (terrible noise when NOT using ac). Shop is having difficulty b/c there are apparently 2 different ac compressors it could be on the 3.4- one with a bracket @the 4:00 position (if I'm not mistaken) & one without. Where should they look on mine to determine which one mine is/needs? They said parts cant help them even with vin# bc all that is given is a part# & not the details about the 4:00 thing. Does this make sense to anyone? They also say they dont see a way to bypass it for now (although I see ac comp. bypass pulleys for sale online- not sure if that does what it sounds like.) They said the same belt runs the ac comp, pwr steering, & alternator, so if its not fixed & goes out I'm stranded. I would appreciate any info at this point!
There are two models and they are not even close to being the same looks. The model was redisgned in mid production. The first model had the 4 oclock mounting the second had a 2 oclock mounting. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/A!s!C+Compressor/02645/C0354.oap?year=1996&make=Pontiac&model=Grand%2BPrix&vi=1255979

It can be done. But, its alot of work and you will need a new bracket for the PS pump. As bad as it sounds, it will be much easier and cheaper if you just replace the AC clutch or compressor. Try to find a used one at a junckyard. Its a very silly design.

Before all this.Check the spring loaded tensioner hasn't seized. If the chirping sound IS the a/c comp. and the bypass pulley is on,yes, the a/c is out of the picture.Plan B might be to get a comp. from a wreckers yard.1/4 the price???Hope this helps you

Testimonial: "Great information and help!"
I have a2004 mustang with a 3.9 making the same noise, and the shop replaced the AC compressor and all belt tensioners. I found that the noise is the timing chain tensionors .
