There are 2 types of airbag systems. The protective restraint system in the interior of the car; and the suspension bags under the car(These can be referred to as airbags).
When fooling around with either, disconnect the vehicle power.
The interior airbags are in the dash, and steering wheel hub. Sometimes early options added side "curtain" bags deploying from headliners or seatbelt housings. These should be left to experts because of the explosive charge and the danger of breaking the fasteners that hold the plastic covers in the interior.
For suspension airbags, they are mounted in place of coil springs. If you have a question, you might want to resubmit it with a symptom that an Expert can help you with.
There is high pressure air in the system and some models have a bleeder valve on the airbox to neutralize the system.
I believe manufacturers may have developed a scanner for the interior airbags, the better scanners can do the suspension.
