Is the secondary air injection system nessary for good engine performance or is it's function only to dilute burn exhaust emissions?


It's only used on cold start to help the Catalytic converter light off . The check engine light will be on all the time if you disconnect it .
The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System aids in the reduction of hydrocarbon exhaust emissions during a cold start-up. This occurs when the start-up engine coolant temperature (ECT) is between 5-50°C (41-122°F), and the intake air temperature (IAT) is between 5-60°C (41-140°F). The AIR pump operates 5-60 seconds after start-up.
The powertrain control module (PCM) activates the AIR system by simultaneously supplying grounds to the AIR pump and the AIR valve relays. This action closes the relays' internal contacts. The AIR pump and the AIR control solenoid valve/pressure sensor assembly are in turn energized, the pump runs and the control/shut-off valve opens.
The AIR pump sends pressurized fresh air into the pipes/hoses through the open control/shut-off valve, and into the exhaust manifold. The extra air accelerates the catalyst operation, helping it to reach operating temperature faster. The AIR pump remains ON for a short period of time after the control/shut-off valve is commanded OFF. When the AIR pump is commanded OFF it will not run or be activated until the next vehicle start. Circuit Description
The secondary air injection (AIR) system reduces exhaust emissions after initial engine starts. This occurs when the engine start-up coolant temperature and the intake air temperature (IAT) are at the parameters indicated in Conditions for Running. The AIR pump will continue to operate until Closed Loop operation is achieved.
The powertrain control module (PCM) activates the AIR system by simultaneously supplying a ground to the AIR pump relay and the AIR solenoid relay. The AIR pump forces pressurized fresh air into the pipes/hoses and past the AIR check valve into the bank 1 exhaust manifold, accelerating the catalyst operation. When the AIR system is inactive, the AIR shut-off valve prevents airflow in either direction.
The PCM can detect an AIR system airflow fault by monitoring the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) bank 1 sensor 1 during normal Closed Loop engine operation. This is an active test. The active test will pass or fail based on the response from the HO2S 1. The active test consists of three tests run at 3-second intervals. A decreasing HO2S 1 voltage parameter response indicates that the AIR system is functioning properly.
The AIR system consists of the following components:
• The AIR pump
• The AIR pump relay
• The AIR injection electronic shut-off valve
• The AIR injection solenoid relay
• The fuses, and the related wiring
• The pipes/hoses
When the PCM detects an insufficient HO2S 1 response, DTC P0410 sets.

I have a service engine soon light on and have hooked up an OBD11 reader to it and got code P0410 pertaining to a secondary air injection problem. hoses are fine, pump is new.


P0410 Oldsmobile - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

Possible causes: - Faulty Vacuum hoses damaged
- Faulty Air Pump inoperative
- Air bypass solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Air bypass solenoid circuit poor electrical connection
- Air bypass solenoid leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed
- Air diverter valve leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed

Tech notes: Visually inspect AIR pump and AIR bypass valve harness and connector, if connector are OK, then replaced AIR bypass valve.

When is the code detected? The secondary air injection system does not detect the presence of air in the exhaust when introduced by the secondary air injection system.

Possible symptoms: - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine hesitation

P0410 Oldsmobile Description An air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds the Air pump relay control circuit which energizes the Air pump. The PCM also grounds the Air combination valve vacuum control solenoid circuit, which energizes the Air vacuum control solenoid. Vacuum is then applied to both Air combination valve diaphragms which opens the shut off valves. The PCM enables both circuits simultaneously when Air system operations id desired. When the AIR system is active, then Air pump forces fresh air into the exhaust stream in order to accelerate catalyst operation. The AIR combination valves replace the conventional check valves. When the AIR system is inactive the shut off valves prevent air flow in either direction.

Hello,
The Secondary Air pump is actually the Supercharger/Kompressor, the supercharger runs off the belt drive and the air is diverted through some valves for Secondary Injection. There actually is no pump on this engine. Quite clever design in my opinion. Hope that helps.

Secondary air injection check valve


Exactly what the code entitles, the air injection valves that shoot air in the exhaust to help burn excess gasses when the engine warms up the engine when it's cold are malfunctionning. When the engine is cold is just started, it uses what we call a open loop, the engine runs fuel maps and such with a stored program in the ECU that doesnt take in account all the sensors to allow a smooth start and warmup, then after it's warm enough and all, it goes to closed loop using all sensors to lessen the pollution. So when in closed loop, the ECU uses the oxygen sensors to adjust air/fuel ratio, but seeing as how the air injection is possibly jammed open or malfunctionning in some other way and sending air in the exhaust, the sensor think the engine is running lean and injects extra fuel to compensate, but since the reading is false, the engine is actually running rich and making you lose power. Try bypassing the air injection if you want to test this, just find the hose in the exhaust manifold that goes to some black plastic canister type thing and unplug the hose from the canister and find a way to jam it shut so no air can get in. If you sealed it good you should now have full power when the engine has run a while. Hope this helps!

How do i fix a0410 code


The code basically says that the O2 sensors did not see the extra oxygen that the air injection system would normally provide.
Check that the air injection shut-off valves hold vacuum. It's a common failure.
Also, you might want to power up the air injection pump and make sure it is working.

Where is the shut off valve for the secondary air


on the passanger side right above the exhaust manifold. bolted directly to the head with two 13mm bolts, the trans dipstick also bolts to the rear shutoff valve bolt.
