The test to be done is a compression test
If it is the one cylinder really low compared to the rest on the dry test it could be rings/ scored bore and if it doesn't improve on the wet test then it will most probably be a valve or a valve seat insert
most head gaskets show as adjacent cylinders low as the compression is passed across the gasket to the adjacent cylinder.

Take it to a mechanic to have the cylinder check by a leak down test to find out whether it is a head gasket, a valve, or the rings which are leaking. Go from there.....

I think you need to start with the basics as there could be numerous reasons to this. Start by checking fuel pressure, engine cylinder compession and make sure that each spark plug is sparking. You did not mention which engine is you have.

Overheats while driving stops when still cuts off

What EEC IV engine control trouble codes do you have? sounds like you have a mechanical problem, run a cylinder compession test and have the engine tested for a blown cylinder head gasket.

Worsening shudder

Do a compression test on the cylinder and compare it to a cylinder on the other side. If the compession reads lower in #4 the chances of the head gasket leaking is pretty good. What's happening is #4 cylinder may be blowing air into the cylinder next to it. You will not have any water in the oil or visa versa if this is happening.
