Question about 1989 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

I have a 1989 Pontiac Bonneville with a 3.8L v6, that sputters when ever it's at an idle. It acts as if It's not getting enough fuel at times and tries to die. However, it always catches itself and go

The car's engine is in really good shape, oil is recently changed within 1500 miles, and there are no leaks in the car. The check engine light has been on ever since I received the vehicle however. Not sure if that's part of the problem. Also, another problem with the vehicle is that every time I aggressively accelerate with my car, it will back fire, and stop the engine for a second. it will shortly pick back up after that, and won't do it again until I turn the car off. I'm confused and am looking for help.

I would start with basics: check timing, plugs, firing order,compression,etc.... Does your car have oxygen sensor?,catalytic bad?,etc.; don't buy things unless you first check if component is bad. Hope this helps. Alberto

SOURCE: engine started dying after serpentine belt

If I remember correctly, the serpentine belt change on this motor can be quite involved. It may require the battery being disconnected to avoid shorting out cables. Check for loose battery cables especially on the negative side where it is secured to the engine block.

SOURCE: car is quiting while going down road

Have you ever replaced the ignition coil? Sometimes a coil will heat up and break apart inside losing your connection/charge inside it to fire your plugs.

My 1992 SE sputters when accelerating and sometimes stalls out

It is a clear case of the fuel pump malfunctioning. As not enough fuel is being pumped when accelerating, the engine sputters and stalls. The pump could be needing servicing. Nothing serious. Happens. So, please have it serviced.
