I have a Cadillac CTS 3.6L the problem is I'm having it's misfiring in cylinder one I already replaced all spark plugs as well as coils and fuel injector It misfires from time to time


unless you have read the fault codes , I have to ask --how can you be sure that it is no 1 piston at fault
take it in for a compression test as the problem could be mechanical-- sticking valve , loose valve seat insert , hydraulic lifter sticking or pumping up , holding the valve open

It seems to me that if the belt breaks , even on an interference engine: the valves will slam shut . Maybe it 50/50 chance either way.


belt has to be replaced any way
compression test on the cylinders.. tells you straight away
zero or low compression numbers ..valves bent

in an interference engine OHC or DOHC belt breaks
the cams stop dead and pistons continue to move up and down

non interference there is a gap between pistons and valves

How do you set the timing?


Cam lobes on piston firing should be sticking up in the air,opposite the one that's got cam lobes opening or just closing the valves

{1990 plymonth laser 16v dohc 2.o } All intake valves are down in open position and want come back up. What could cause this.


I'll assume that the motor had been running normally up to this point but then suddenly quit or wouldn't restart after being shut off. What might be wrong is that the intake valves may have gotten bent or damaged from contact with the pistons if the timing belt has gotten out of time or has broken. This is an "interference" type of engine which means that if the camshaft[s] get out of synch with the crankshaft then the valves may still be held open, or down, yet as the piston is reaching the top of it's stroke. If the valves can't get out of the way then the piston will strike them and bend them enough so they become stuck open. There often is some pretty severe head damage that results from this type of impact and the the cylinder head will need to be removed and closely inspected & repaired as needed.

On the 960 volvo if i broke atimeing belt while driveing dont the pistons come up as far as the crank will let it and the valves stop where they are at if not why dont the pistons hit the valves while its...


If the belt is turning the bottom and top end in time,no problem.Break a belt and the top end stops with the some valves open and some closed,meantime the bottom end keeps going around and around and the pistons up and down until the engine not only quits but continues until the vehicle is either put in neutral or until it comes to a stop,either way the damage is dune with-in the first seconds of the belt breaking,sorry for the news but this is true of all overhead valve engines.

I need to push in the brake piston to allow for the new pads, how do i do it


Loosen the bleeder valve open on the caliper. Take a C Clamp and use that to press thei piston back in. Very simple. Tighten the bleeder valve shut when doe with sombody holding the brake pedal down firmly as you tighten the valve. That prevents air getting into the line

Will not go into overdrive


the transmission has solenoids for the foward gears. Your solenoid for the overdrive may be at fault or the valve body piston is sticking shut.

bent valves can be from timing belt stretch but would have been running very rough and would have had to be replaced others are bad valve springs- rocker arms not adjusted right- valve sticking-push rods sticking-camshaft walking- oil pressure problems

Prelude shut down while driving, now will not start. battery good


motor will not turn over at all? well sounds like one of two things
1 you broke the timing belt and the pistons hit the valves sticking one thru a piston, thats why it wont turn over
2 you have a wiring problem keeping enough voltage from getting to your starter

Engine keeps cuting out when breaks are applied


I would say idle air control valve sticking. its common on Renaults. This valve controls the air passing through the throttle body when you open and shut throttle. eg, foot down throttle open, the idle valve will be shut. back off throttle, then the air is shut off through main throttle body, so the valve opens to allow just enough air in for tickover. if valve sticking or moving to slowly it will not open in time to catch the idle when throttle shut, hence it cuts out.
