How did the old fluid look? Dark, dirty brown, dirty red, clear red, good-about that scale, from bad to good. Dark fluid is burned fluid, and couldn't get much worse. Did you check for metal shavings or pieces of metal in the pan?
If you have no reason to suspect mechanical damage, it would be worth a good diagnosis by a transmission place. It could be a torque converter. If it has electronic shift points, there could be related trouble codes. On newer models the lock up solenoid is controlled by the computer. On newer, newer models there's so many computers, it's a traveling network.
Depending on age and mileage, most times it's a transmission rebuild or replacement choice, fewer times it can be repaired without a rebuild. If it's good for you otherwise, pay for a good diagnosis.

SOURCE: Trouble code P1740 on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

I had the same code on my 2001 dodge 2500. The truck wouldn't shift from 3-4. I pulled the trans pan off and replaced a broken spring ($2.00). It is behind a thin plate with 3-4 small torq screws. You don't have to remove the valvebody. Only took me 45 minutes to fix.

I would like to give thanks to Jeff Russel from Teal automotive. He said this is a very common problem. He sells any part for any automatic Transmision and his prices are very affordable.
Here is a link to the website.

Hope this helps.

Try putting it in neutral before putting it in drive. the pump doesn't engage in park and sometimes the fluid leaks back out of the torque converter. I have the same problem in my 2004 Ram 3500 and 70 Challenger.

The torque converter is why you cant move.If it were bands, first and reverse are the first to go. Not sure why its not starting. The 2 are unrelated.

1986 dodge ram 150 tranny problem

Sorry this is not an easy fix the clutch packs in the transmission are slipping, usually caused by wear, but the hydraulic pump is probably getting week. As the oil warms up the oil gets thinner and the hydraulic pressure decreases. Times for a overhaul of the transmission, and if the torque converter can not be flushed a new torque converter is recommended. You may get lucky buy changing the fluid several times, but if the transmission is 22 years old it may not help.
