SOURCE: Datsun stanza 1980 tappets (lifters)

This car has hydraulic lifters( tappets} therefore should not adjustment, you probably have a bad or weak lifter. But, in any case you have to remove the valve covers to make the adjustment. You will see the adjustable bolt on the rocker arm. rotate the engine until the valve is all the way to the top, [no tension on the valve spring] then place a feeler Gage in between the rocker arm and the valve stem, adjust the rocker arm until the feeler Gage is snug but not tight. Do this with each valve. Check the book for the correct Gage to use but I think it is a .018.

I would like to set the tappets sound like a diesel motor


Depending on the engine will determine if you can "adjust the tappets". Older cars had solid lifters so they had to be adjusted. Newer cars have hydraulic lifters and need no adjusting.

If your tappets sound like a "diesel motor" it may be they are not getting oil - or the center of the tube that provides oil to the tappets are blocked.

Need to remove the valve cover and run the engine just long enough to see if oil is coming out of the lifter. If when you remove the valve cover and the lifters look dry then you have a "lubricating problem" and you need to get it taken care of immediately.

If you have hydraulic lifters(tappets) then you turn the adjusting screw 1/4 turn past the point where there is no noise from the rocker arm. If you have solid lifters, then you'll have to get the cold clearance spec for that engine and adjust accordingly.

Depends on the year and engine. The older engines have hydrolic lifters. The newer engines 06 and up with CVVT have solid lifters so you would have to pull the valve covers and use a feeler gauge to measure clearances and replace the tappets accordingly.

Adjust valve tappets on flat head engine


I'd say that it all depends upon whether or not you have adjustable lifters. All flatheads have solid lifters, but most of the older (pre-50's) flatheads had non-adjustable lifters. Elimination of valve lash was accomplished by welding a glob of metal on the top of the valve stem and grinding it down to the required height. In the 50's, adjustable lifters were introduced, but it seems that at the same time, manufacturers increased the weight of the valves (thicker stem walls or solid rather than hollow stems). If you have adjustable lifters, try .008 on the intakes and .016 on the exhaust.

Hi Bill, I'm fairly sure your vehicle has hydrolic tappets. If they are noisy I advise replacing the lifter assemblies. The lifters ride on top of the camshaft which is usually fitted inside the engine block. Depending on the engine you may be able to remove the lifters with a stiff wire onto which a very small hook has been fashioned at its end. Remove the rocker shaft assembly and then the push rods. make sure the wire is the correct length to reach the lifters and engage the hook into the clips on top of the lifters and gently pull them out. Before fitting the new lifters, fill a container with a very thin lubricating oil or diesel, submerge the lifters in the oil and with a suitable tool which will not damage the surface where the push rods rest, pump them until all signs of air are evacuated from each. Fit the new units into the engine and refit the rocker shaft assembly. Make the first adjustment of the valves using 0.30mm feeler gauge. If possible get a third tappet cover and cut off the top by removing enough material to allow the use of the tools required to carry out final adjustments. Start the engine and have it running at idle speed. the until the hydrolic followers become fully charged. the sound you should hear is a clacking sound. Tighten further until the sound disappears and then a further half turn and then tighten the locking nut. Some vehicles are fitted with single self locking nuts, which should be replaced with new. Once the engine is running as it should replace the tappet covers and all the other stuff, put your feet up, give yourself a pat on the back or get someone else to that for you and you should be done. What is a hydrolic lefter


Never heard of it. Perhaps you are referring to a "Hydraulic Lifter," which is a hydro/mechanical device that transfers lift from the camshaft via a push rod to a rocker arm that pivots to open and close the intake or exhaust valve. Oil pressure fills the lifter with engine oil to automatically set the valve tappet clearance, which would otherwise be done by hand if the lifters were solids.

hydraulics lifters you must replace as they will wear out.

solid tappet lifters can just be adjusted for. Unless you have some custom old engine in yours I'd imagine yours is the first.

You might also try running some pennzoil or quaker state oil to reduce clatter. They're wax based and will often do wonders for semi-clogging the right areas while keeping the other places open. Great for hi mileage motors.

Hydrolic lifters making a taping noise


First thing to do is change oil and filter. Hopefully it has not done this long and has hard faced the shims. Good luck and have a good day.

the oil has dried in the lifters, because it hasnt been changed regularly, it sounds to me you have to replace the lifters
