Check transmission fluid. There should be a dipstick under the hood only if it's automatic. If it's a standard, there is a lot more to checking fluid. If there is nothing showing on your dipstick add some through the dipstick tube. Never add fluid though while car is running in gear as it will take off on you when fluid reaches transmission. Add a liter, check again, then follow the proper way to check the fluid level. The proper way will be written on the dipstick itself. It may say check hot in park, or check in neutral, but never add it like that if there is nothing showing on the dipstick.Let me know how you make out

Hi,2002 cavalier now the clutch pedal goes in to start the vehicle and once the pedal is released all the way car barely moves. i thought the slave or master cylinder could be shot

I would think that the clutch itself is shot. If it was the slave cylinder or the master cylinder, you would not be able to get the car into gear when the engine is running. If it goes into gear fine, but just doesn't want to move....it means your clutch is not griping.

1998 Honda Civic manual trans will not shift into gears. Car starts, push in clutch and it goes to the floor, release clutch and comes back up. Unable to put into gears. Brake fluid and clutch fluid seem...

Eric, how are you confirming whether or not the car goes into gear if you shift gears without the engine running? One way would be to put it in 1st and see if you can push the car. If you can't, it is in gear.

Another option is to roll the car slightly forward or backward (engine off) while trying to put the car in gear. Once it is in gear, then the car shouldn't move any further. However, if it goes into gear, DO NOT start the car without taking it back out of gear.

The clutch is much more likely to be the problem than the transmission.

If the clutch fluid ever ran dry, then the clutch hydraulics will need to be bled of air. Otherwise, the problem could be the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder or throwout bearing. Since you didn't report the clutch slipping (e.g. engine revving without accelerating when in gear) it is likely not the clutch disks themselves.

Hard to tell, I dont fully understand what you have written as your problem. i.e. no engine start or the car will not move when the engine is on and you put it in gear and release the clutch
