Question about 2008 Hyundai Elantra
I put on the defroster which heats up and blows but when switch to heat vents, it stays on defroster

It is located under the alternator. If you are looking down at the engine, it is to the far left. If you are under the car it is to the far right before the oil pan.

sounds like your A/C compressor has failed.
Thermostat only controls coolant going through engine - not the refrigerant in the A/C system.
The bad compressor is causing extra load on the engine and making it heat up.
Unplug the compressor and take a test drive.
If it is unplugged - the clutch will not engage.
see if it heats up - and report back with your findings.

this is right, this uses motors,the selector motor is located on the driverside of the heater/ac box, there are a few of these motors you will need to test them by operating the controls until you spot the one that doesnt move,these motors are on the box one or two on passengerside and one or two more on the driveside, all depending on if you have daul zones or not good luck this can get tricky locating the right one and testing it.

Either the "MODE" control cable has come loose from the actuator pivot connection, or the MODE door inside the air box is broken.
