Question about Cars & Trucks
I have a 1991 Ford Econoline 350. I recently had the dual tank relay switche replaced at Ford. Now the van has difficulty starting in the morning after sitting overnight. She cranks over but won't catch. Once started, she's good the rest of the day. What's causing it not to start after sitting overnight?
It may not have anything to do with the tank switch. It sounds like the check valve in the pump has failed. The valve prevents fuel pressure from draining back into the tank.

I suspect the fuel pump has stopped working, check the fuel pressure or listen to the noise it makes by taking off the gas cap and listening for a humming noise when the key is turned on, this will stop after a few seconds.

HI,AS IT IS HARD TO START THESE EXTRA COLD MORNINGS WE ARE GETTING,TRY A SET OF GLOW PLUGS, YOU CAN SEE THEM ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD,WITH A WIRE JOINING THEM UP,YOU WILL NEED A 8mm SCOKET , FOR THE WIRE, AND A DEEP 12mm ONE FOR THE PLUGS,UNSCREW TO THE LEFT,AND PUT A BIT OF GREASE ON THE THREAD OF THE NEW ONES AS THEY CROSS TREAD EASY,ABOUT 17POUNDS FOR A SET,THANKS.

hello ralph...check the coolant temp sensor. It acts as a choke to richen fuel mixture when cold. If it doesn't work correctly, hard starting will occur. Once engine reaches operating temp, the problem is usually non-existent. also....
Worn spark plugs.
Fouled spark plugs.
Worn distributor cap and rotor.
Old ignition wires.
Low engine coolant level.
Faulty MAP sensor...any of these will effect cold starting....
Good luck...i hope this helps.

Unfortunately there are many things that could be causing this. I would check the engine coolant temp. sensor ..and see what its reading with the engine hot. Your going to need a scan tool to get that reading...or just change the sensor...good luck
