when the check engine light comes on, your car goes into a mode where instead of everything being normal, things are forced, to try and compensate for something else being wrong. It most likely does need a new timing belt, and a complete tuneup INCLUDING plugs and wires. we have a 1984 toyota corolla and it purrs like ground rice, I suggest the tuneup to continue proper rice production.

I'm assuming that it's a standard shift? Take the boot off so you can get at the bottom of the shifter where it goes to the transmission, as you are in the cab. The collar at the base, you have to push down and turn counter clockwise about a quarter turn, to remove it.

If the shift console is on floor then look for bolts holding it down. Take out bolts and then you can maneuver console so you can see where light is plugged in and get the right light to replace it. It will probably be a small light which tend to cost a bit more, but at least you'll have the light back.

Hi angelsr. Begin by checking the transmission fluid level. It will operate best when it is at the high end of the full range. Once you have checked that and possibly added fluid to the transmission, drive it for 5 miles and then go into 4H. IF it still isn't working properly chances are that the bands on the transmission are loose. Then drive to an AAMCO transmission shop or other transmission shop and have your transmission serviced. Thanks for choosing Fixya!

With such a small engine, the automatic Echo won't shift into overdrive (4th gear) until a certain engine/transmission temperature is reached. This is to protect the bearings and gears from too much torque and stress while the oil is still cold and not flowing at it's optimum level. Usually when the blue "cold" light on the dash shuts off, the transmission will up-shift to 4th. When it is very cold, it could take another few minutes of driving before it will do so.
