Open Question

Replaced thermostat system still does not heat

Replaced thermostat, meter indicates some heat then no heat. Installed 192 degree thermostat the hot cold meter never get above low heat . Why?

How often has the coolant been changed? My only guess is that it hasn't and the hoses and the heater core are plugged up with goo and a flush is needed

Bad NEW thermostat? I had the same problem on my first generation Dakota. The problem for me turned out to be the DODGE thermostat I used to replace the old Dodge part. I went and got a Stant from local auto parts store using the standard temperature spec and quit shivering the next time I drove it. I hope that helps!

No Blower in Floor Mode
A customer arrives with a 1983 to 1995 Full Size Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury
automobile with automatic temperature control. If the complaint is no blower operation when
the floor mode is selected, the vehicle may have a problem with the thermal blower lockout
switch also referred to as the CELO (cold engine lock out switch).
The thermal blower lock out switch is located in the heater core intake hose. The two
wire switch has a thermal element with a small set of contacts, the contacts are open when the
coolant is below 120°F and closed when the coolant is above 120°F. The thermal blower lock
out switch also contains a vacuum switch, which applies vacuum to the outside/recirculate
valve when the system is in the floor position. When the engine coolant is below 120 degrees
and the selector is set to floor position, the thermal blower lock out prevents blower from
turning on and closes off the outside air during engine warm-up. When the coolant
temperature is above 120 degrees, and the selector is set to the floor position, the thermal
blower lock out switch allows the blower to operate and opens the outside air door.
In order to diagnose this problem, test the thermal blower lockout switch with the
engine at normal operating temperature (above 120°F). Unplug the wire harness connector
from the thermal blower lockout switch. Using a 15-amp fused wire, jumper the harness
terminals to test the switch. If the blower comes on, the thermal blower lock out switch is
faulty. If the blower doesn’t come on, look for an open between the control head selector and
thermal blower lock out switch.
In some cases the blower may continually run even when the engine temperature is
below 120 degrees. Unplug the thermal blower lock out switch and if the blower motor turns
off, the thermal blower lock out switch is faulty. If the motor continues to run, look for a
short to power between the control head selector and thermal blower lock out switch

the dommed part of the T-stat goes up, it won't go in backwards as memory serves me, what u almost certainly have going on here is the Air temperature control electric bend door actuator s defective, and the door is stuck in the cold air position in the heating/ac duct, to replace this the dash must be removed from the car..

Unlock the thermostat


The thermostat on a car is a fixed item. It is factory designed at 160 degrees, 180 degrees or 192 degrees. The heat from the engine opens it and closes it as the engine cools. If it sticks and wont open the car overheats. It is a 10.00 part sold at just about any automotive store. You can not "unlock" it.

if you have little or no heat from your heater, the thermostat is open and bad, if it is stuck shut the temperature of the radiator up top will be colder by alot than the bottom-you can also check the top hose coming out of the radiator when the engine is warned up, it will not be very hot and the engine temp gauge will read very high. the best way to check a thermostat is to remove it and place it in a pan of water, heat it on a stove-a 192 degree thermostat starts to open at 192 ans should be fully open at 210 degrees.

The brown looking chiffon could be oil in the water. However, if you are sure the system is ok then I would check the actuator door motor on the heater and make sure it is allowing the heat into the car. Seems as if you have done as much as you can.

Feel the hoses going to heater core, one should be hot and the other warm. If one is cold or both are then heater core is clogged. Make sure heater control valve works and as vacuum to it and or the cable is free.

First make sure the cooling system is full. The best way to test the thermostat is with a scan tool. This will plug into the diagnostic connector and give you the actual temperature when the thermostat opens. It should open at 192 degrees F. Without a scan tool you will need to resort to the old feel method. Start the engine cold and check the upper radiator hose as the engine warms up. It should feel cool and then hot when the thermostat opens. It should not gradually get warmer. Also feel the heater hoses. They should be about the same temperature. If one is hot and the other cold it means the heater core is plugged up.

Hello. Not a 'dumb question', not at all.

You need a 192 degree thermostat installed. Ths keeps the coolant temperature at 192 degrees. That is the max temperature thermostat that is available.

If it is REALLY cold, you 'could' place a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator, and block 1/2 of the fins. This will keep the coolant temperature from decreasing very rapidly when the thermostat opens.

However, this cardboard trick is for sustained temperatures at or near zero F. Running the car with the radiator blocked in higher temperatures may cause an overheat condition, and you don't want that.

Heat blow cold air


most likely a problem with the water circulation around the heater core. if you've never used the heater, some vehicles have a hot water shut-off valve for the heater hoses. another possibility is the thermostat had been removed. the easiest way is to start the vehicle and slowly allow it to warm up monitoring the water temperature. it should heat up to normal water temperature, then heat up and then drop down. the thermostat is usually around 180 degrees or 192 degrees. it allows the water around the engine block to heat up then once it reaches 180 or whatever it opens up circulating the cooler water from the radiator into the engine block and pushing the hotter water into the radiator to cool off. no thermostat, then the water keeps constantly circulating not allowing it to properly heat up. this can slow the heater down, lower fuel economy, alot of things especially in the winter driving...

What should be the operating temp of Grand Cherokee on warm day? Mine sometimes runs 240-250 degrees


U didn't say the engine, if it is a 6cylinder then around 195-200 F, if a V8 they run very hot, around 225 F, so you have a problem, is the coolant clean? no rust present? I would suspect that you need the radiator pulled and roded out by a radiator shop.
