Hi, for the truck to idle high, there must be air getting into the engine that shouldn't be. One obvious thing to check is the throttle plate. The throttle should close almost fully. The throttle cable should also be a little loose with the throttle plate fully closed. If the throttle is closing OK, then look at other ports that can let air into the engine downstream of the throttle. These may include the EGR port, the PCV port, the EVAP purge port, among others. Though you have changed the EGR valve, check to make sure the solenoid valve isn't stuck open, which would allow vacuum to keep the EGR valve open. You can check this by simply disconnecting the vacuum line from the EGR valve to see if the idle will come down. You can take the same approach with the other ports--remove each hose attached to the intake manifold and plug the port with your finger to see if it makes a difference. If none of the ports, when blocked, will bring down the idle, then you have to suspect an intake manifold gasket leak. You can check this by spraying carb cleaner on the gaskets while the engine is running. If the engine speed changes at all when the gaskets are sprayed, you have a leak. Hi, Guy! My 95 Bronco runs a little rough whenever one of the vacuum lines gets broken or disconnected. Because of the age, these plastic lines get brittle and break easily. Check them all. You might also want to look at your engine's dampener (behind the engine's main pulley). Sometimes the dampener becomes detached from the pulley and causes the engine to vibrate.

Check and see if the egr is stuck open at idle. It should have ported vacuum on egr valve. If egr is not stuck open, Check throttle position sensor, and map sensor for proper operation. Also check throttle plate for carbon buildup

The egr is only active when the engine is under load, it should not make a difference when you pull the line off. The idle going up and down is due to a vacuum leak, could be the upper intake gasket, these were a common problem and you have to remove it anyway to do the valve cover gasket. The only catch here is that you need a extra long t40 torx driver to get to the bolts that hold it on. These should be available at a good parts store, they were made specifically for this job.

Look behind the motor, next to the firewall. There's a vacuum check valve that keeps the air gulp pump from pressurizing the crankcase. Mine was shot; had the same symtoms. Also, make sure that the EGR valve is closing at low idle.

You don't need an engine light to check the codes. First, do a KOEO (key on, engine off), but, let me tell you, when this happened to me (1986 Full size with 302 EFI, multiport injection) NOTHING showed up. No one, not Ford, not emission specialists, nada, knew the vacuum check valve existed.

By the way; are you getting motor oil in the air filter housing?

Have u checked for vacuum leaks or poss leaking EGR valve? use carb spray around the upper intake manifold where it bolts to the lower manifold, spray vacuum lines where they are connected to the engine vacuum ports, the idle speed will change if u hit a leak, as far as the EGR valve goes see if it gets hot at idle, if it does it is leaking, if all checks ok replace the O2 sensor, but i suspect u will find a leak at the upper intake plenum.

PVC valve is not metering air correctly, it will appear ok shaking it but looses it ability to maintain proper position causing a medium to gross vacuum leak.
