SOURCE: no brake lights

Dear Madam or Sir,

the cause of your concern is a defective brake pedal switch. Of course the correct operation of this switch is responsable to activate the brake lights but it also activates an interlock mechanism in the shift column, so you cannot put the lever out of P position without stepping on the brake pedal. This is meant as protective system to prevent the car from moving accidently.

Kind regards from Germany

SOURCE: 1998 lincoln brake light

these symptoms indicate the brake light switch above the brake pedal has failed. The switch has 2 connectors on it--one for the brake lights and one for the shift solenoid. If you pull the connectors off the switch and short the terminals inside each one together using a big paper clip or similar conductive material this should confirm by the operation of each function that the switch is the problem and need to be replaced. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Can't shift out of park, no brake lights

This is a problem with the brake sensor lockout. Most likely it is out of place or broken and shorting. It is on the brake pedal lever.

My 2007 Lincoln MKZ will not go in gear . Everything else is working fine what could be the problems?

Most newer vehicles have a safety feature which prevents shifting out of park if the brake pedal is not engaged. If you are holding the brake pedal down and still won't shift into gear, this pedal sensor could be malfunctioning.

GEAR SHIFT STUCK IN PARK HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS

check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.

I have a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII, will not shift out of park!

Hello Sparky.

There is a solenoid that unlocks the shifter when the brakes are applied.
Check for brake light operation. If no brake lamps, check the brake lamp fuse in the instrument panel fuse box. It is fuse number 11 and is a 10 amp fuse.
If blown you will have a short in the system and it will need to be traced and repaired.
If you need more help with this issue please ask me here.

Thank you for using FixYa.

My 1997 Lincoln Mark 8 will not shift into gear.

it may be a shifter linkage issue. There is an interlock to prevent the car from bouncing out of park into reverse and if the linkage is not correctly adjusted, then it locks up.
