How to clean the headlight lens

This is a most unusual question as almost everyone knows how to clean one of the earlier glass headlights which like the later polycarbonate lens just needs washing with water and detergent and perhaps a brief polish with a glass cleaner or polish.

I therefore suspect your headlamp lenses are not dirty but have become scratched and sandblasted and in the case of the polycarbonate ones, discoloured.

If this is the case then the only solution is replacement though polycarbonate lenses can be improved and given a longer service life if not too seriously discoloured by polishing with an abrasive compound - the sort of cutting compound used on dull and rough auto paintwork and then finished with a finer compound. It is extremely long and hard work by hand but the careful use of a polishing machine will shorten the task considerably.

I suggest you ask for help and/or advice at your local car sprayshop.

With all the lights on it won't start but battery lights fades fast

The year--make--model wasn't listed?
If your talking about the starter motor, why crank it with all the lites on, your talking headlamps on? Even with auto-headlamps, you can usually turn them off, one way or another.
Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good. Check your charging system.
If it cranks good, but, won't start, have helper crank it, where applicable, check spark--fuel--injector pulse.
How long since tune-up?
Are there any applicable trouble codes?

Headlamp plastic covers are cloudy...where can you buy replacements? The dealer wants $700 for replacement light units...all I need is the covers....

You can not buy just the covers. They come as complete assemblies as the dealer quoted you. What you can do is call around your area to find a shop that offer's headlamp restorations.

Basically they will sand all the degraded material off of the lenses, polish them, and then reseal them. I do them all the time with fantastic results.

I can give you some instruction on how to do this yourself if you are interested or you can check out my how to tip.

Headlights seem to be dim

Check for a bad ground around the headlamp wiring. You have power at the lamps but the ground may be preventing full load to the lights.
