Question about Ford Cars & Trucks

2 Answers

Ok I have a 1985 F250 460, I start it up, it runs for about 2 seconds then dies, the fuel pump has been replaced, the ignition coil has been replaced. I bought a brand new Holley carburetor for it and the ignition control module has been replaced. I am stuck on this one everything that I can think of I've tried and it still will not run correctly would there be anybody that would have any suggestions to this problem?

Check to see if there is a small filter in the fitting before the carby . Normally there is a small brass gauge filter in that connection that blocks very quickly. Check that the float is not stuck in the bowl cavity and blocking off the fuel. Adjust the float level by removing the level plug on the side of the bowl ( brand new does not necessarily mean ready for immediate use as adjustments have to be made on the engine . Check and adjust the position of the idle mixture screws as they may be screwed too far in

SOURCE: 1997 Neon dies, starts after electric fuel pump relay swapped

Hello, I would assume this is your fuel pump inside your tank. I would first however do some basics like a general tuneup. For starters I would replace your spark plugs and wires, rotary cap and button and check your fuses. Run some injector cleaner through your system. You know quick simple cheap things before you get to the fuel pump inside the gas tank which can be kinda expensive. The warm up then dies can be caused by, "blownout or fouled," spark plugs. I hope this gives you a general direction in which to go. A sidenote is that coil packs do not normally run an igntion code and I for one do not like them becuase they are expensive.

If hall effect switch was bad you wouldn't get any spark. What year 2.5L is this?Is this a 2 injector Throttle Body? The pink wire on top of injectors comes thru a 20Amp fuse controlled by the Ignition switch you should have battery voltage with key on The dark green and dark blue wires come from the pcm which are called injector drivers the drivers supply a pulsating ground if you crank the engine with a test light between either pink/dk green or pink/dk blue test light should flash dimmlythat would mean injectors are being driven but there isn't any fuel at the injector or the injectors are bad no pulse means either a bad computer ( which these drivers are known for going bad)or the computer isn't being commanded to fire the injectors.

Ok a quick check. When the engine cuts out and you go for restart it dies within 5 seconds. Next time put the ignition at position 2 (on but not starting) and wait one minute, then start the car. If the engine again runs for 30 seconds before cutting off this tells you its is a fuel problem. If the fuel is supplied slowly it fills the carburettor fuel bowls and when the car starts it quickly uses up these local reservoirs of fuel faster than they can be replenished. When you try to restart immediately there is only a tiny amount of fuel and so it used up almost immediately. By leaving the ignition on 2 for while it gives the pump time to fill the carburettor bowls and this takes a while longer to run down when the engine starts. Just before moving on does the car have a choke OK remove the low tension connection to the coil, basically remove any chance of a spark. Put a big old towel around the carb. Now remove the fuel line at the carburettor and put ignition on 2 to engage the starter pump. Listen to pump operation and look at the rate of fuel being pushed from the disconnected fuel pipe. If the flow is slow check on pump and filters.

85 with TBI only needs 13lbs of fuel pressure. verify that the fuel filter is clean. there is no easy way to ck fuel pressure, special adapters are needed, I dont have info here at home but there should be a relay for the pump, on the firewall and the oil pressure switch also powers the pump. did you replace the pump trying to fix this problem or did you just mention it to help troubleshoot the problem? verify that the fuel pump wiring has a good ground, should have been a eyelet that bolted to the frame..when you initially turn the key on, you should hera the fuel pump power up for 2 seconds, then go off, after the engine starts, the power for the pump goes through the oil pressure switch.
