Could be both. The fuel pump would probably stop when oil pressure drops, but it would take a few seconds to loose enough pressure for the engine to stop. In that time you could damage the engine bearings.
You won't know until you fix the pan and try to start it again.

While what you say may be correct there is a oil pressure sensor that turns off the ignition as soon as oil pressure drops below a set point regardless of the fuel pump operation

    I wouldn't think a diesel would have an ignition system . . .

On most vehicles, gas and diesel, the oil pressure switch helps to prevent a fire in a wreck by killing the pump. But its not a sudden stop.

IT sounds like the oil safety system worked on your engine by shutting it down as soon as there was insufficient oil to maintain lubrication . Provided that you did not run the engine past this point I would be fairly sure that no engine damage has occurred . All you should need to do is to replace the sump ( do not bother trying to repair as it is a hopeless exercise), Check for oil pump pick up damage ( bent /cracked broken at fittings)

SOURCE: 1999 Ford Explorer Oil Leak

You most likely hit a curb, the pan is cast aluminum and will break like glass if you hit a curb, the pan can be changed without removing the engine, it is very time consuming, but it can be done.

02 sensors will not cause your vehicle to stall if they are bad enough to stall vehicle then your check engine light would be on. if the oil level only reads when vehicle running then ADD OIL ASAP. the level is very low. your dipstick checks level in pan once all oil drains back to pan with vehicle off. your oil is constantly flowing when vehicle running. that flow is splashing the oil up high enough that you are seeing it then. once truck is off all the oil drains down to pan and means level is so low not hitting the dipstick. If no reading when truck off you may need atleast 2 quarts of oil. Start by adding one quart to see if you get a reading. keep adding until you do. do not check immediately after shutting vehicle off. you have to give the oil time to drain back down to the pan. DO NOT KEEP DRIVING THE VEHICLE THAT LOW ON OIL YOU WILL BLOW YOUR ENGINE.

he is probably saying that the main bearings are damaged from lack of lubrication. if you didnt shut down the engine right after the oil leak it doesnt take long to damage the engine. I would replace the engine in that case.

Golf mk4 tdi major oil leak from lower engine. oil warning light on.

If is loosing oil too fast the light will come up,because oil pump won't compesate for oil pressure lost without proper oil level.Anyhow,i'm thinking oil pan has bad gasket or, or possibly could be hole in the pan.It happens when small rock on the road hits pan so hard it will make a hole.Cheap materials like Magnesium sulfate that are commonly used on VW's these days are just not quality.Hope I could help you.

Unless the drain plug was leaking, there really is no way that all of the oil can come out of the pan, as the oil level is below the sealing area between the pan and the block. With that being said, you will normally not hear any noises untill the oil pressure drops to zero, when there is not sufficient oil at the pickup of the oil pump. After that, and the noises start, you may have internal damage.

Stall as soon as oil light came on..92 sundance

I don't think a 92 sundance will shut the fuel pump down when the oil pressure is low, but it might. Can you get it to run on carb cleaner. If it is oil pressure, the car should start then run a few seconds and die. Have you checked the timing belt? If it broke the distributor will stop turning which would stop the oil pump.
