95 Caprice Classic Won't Shift Out Of Park

My 1995 Caprice Classic won't shift from park once it's started. The only way to get it to shift from park is to turn the key to the first ignition position (lights not on) and to shift to neutral and then start it. Then it can be shifted into reverse or drive but if you shift into park you have to turn the car off and start over again. Any ideas?

The most common causes are the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid.

Can you unlock the steering wheel but not turn on the switch and try it?
The brake switch triggers a lock solenoid when the key is on.

Unable to take out of park position

Do the brake light work? No brake lights and it won't shift out of park. Check your fuses and check for loose wires. Check your brake light switch. If that has failed, you won't be able to get out of park. The other one if the shift lock solenoid which is in the shifter assembly. The brake shift interlock switch prevents the car being shifted from park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Try to apply power/ground to the proper wires & see if it will activate.. If it does, then the problem is between the brake light switch & that solenoid. Could be the wires or the switch.Make sure the shifter cable is still held down in place at the shifter assembly & under the hood. It is the interlock switch that you hear/feel clicking. It is for the prior generation but may still apply.

Good Luck and hopefully you soon will be on the road again...;-)

2008 Saturn Vue Stuck In Park. The car starts fine however when you try to shift out of park the shifter is locked up and won't budge. You have to restart the car multiple times to get the shifter...

these have a safety system so the shifter won`t go into any gear unless the brake is pushed(indicating someone sitting in the drivers seat),if the brake lights aren`t working this indicates that the fuse that operates the shift lock solenoid and brake lights is not working and needs replacing.check the fuses and replace the fuse and things will probably return to normal.

GEAR SHIFT STUCK IN PARK HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS

check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.
