Removed bumper on 2001 JEEP Cherokee

We removed the bumper on our Cherokee to install a tow device. The airbag line discconnected. We reconnected the line when we put the bumper back on. Can we start our Cherokee without the airbag deploying or do we need to do something to reset the airbag system?

Disconnect both battery cables and touch them together to discharge the system. Then replace the bumper and airbag wire. You can then replace the battery cables and start the car. This will let the computer reset the airbag

How much does it cost to replace a gas pump

Fuel pumps are mounted inside the fuel tank. If you have a tow hitch, it will have to be removed. I believe the rear bumper has to come off as well. Lots of little things need to be done. A good shop should be able to do in in a few hours.

Tow bar (mounts) front end of larado

Use the same bolt holes the front bumber uses. You may have to build a bracket that attaches to the frame horns where the bumper mounts and using longer bolts (grade 8) pinch the bumper between the mount and the frame horns. Attach your tow tongue to this mount.

Front bumper damaged.

It's pretty easy to remove the front bumper.

  1. Remove the plastic "air dam" below the bumper by unscrewing and then popping out the four plastic connectors underneath, then two on the sides.
  2. If you have fog lights, disconnect them by reaching up and behind the bumper.
  3. Using an 18mm socket, remove the nuts that hold the bumper to the frame. They will be located immediately behind the tow hooks, if you have them, or the small bumps where the tow hooks would protrude.
  4. Slide the bumper off.
Here's a link to a writeup for installing an aftermarket bumper, but steps 1-11 explain how to remove the factory one, and it includes pictures.

Romoving front Tow Bar...

Just have to remove the 3 bolts on each side of the bumper. Just move the rubber splash guards out of the way so you can see the bolts up under there. Make sure you use anti-seize compound on the bolts when you reinstall. You will probably have to adjust each side of the bumper bracket so it fits back on your Jeep, cause with the tow bar removed, there is a gap now.

96 jeep cherokee sport 4x4

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee and installed a tow hitch this past week. In order to install the necessary support plates with mounted nuts I had to remove the bumper.

First I unscrewed the two screws located at the bottom of each of the plastic rear fenders. The panels (fenders) are then freed by tapping them upward as they are secuted with slots mounted to the body.

WIth the fenders removed, you can now reach to the two mounting bolts which secure the bumber to the frame. They are about 6 to 10 inches from the side of the bumber towards the center. Remove both of these bolts, then release the two bottom bolts and the bumber is free. Be careful not to break the plastic splash guard which runs along the top of the bumber and fastends to the body below the hatch.

Besure to spray the bolts with a good penetrating oil to help free them up before you strip the heads.

Good Luck, hope my experience helps you!

-Been there!
