How do i replace the internal transmission seal on a 2002 mazda 626

Internal seal leaking. Does the entire transmission need to be pulled to change this seal?

Yes, and if the seal is gone and you open it up, you will probably find other issues. Best to take this to a transmission shop.

Transmissions these days need very little maintenance, our fluids are advanced formulas that hold up for an average of 100,000 miles, most vehicle manufactures recommend no maintenance for automatic transaxles these days.As for a transmission flush I don't recommend this because it's an expense that is not needed and possibly could loosen some contaminants setting them loose to possibly clog some of the very small passages in the transaxle requiring full transaxle service,which could include removal,dissassembly,etc of your trans.Now draining and replacing fluid is OK if that makes you feel a peace of mind but normally not needed,if you decide to do that,as far as quantity just note approx. how much fluid is drained and purchase similar amount in quarts and then refill (DO NOT OVERFILL)
start engine, let it warm up to operating temp,then check the transmission dipstick for the correct level,remember the vehicle needs to be on a level surface,hot idiling in park when you check the fluid level. Good luck !

The transmission range sensor aka neutral safety switch is located underneath the air filter on top of the transaxle and very easy to access. Replace this part (around $50) and it will solve your problem.
What happens is this, when your tranny warms up, it disperses heat to the sensor switch and if its faulty or worn out, will send faulty relays to the transmissiom computer module (TCM) and makes the transmission shift irratically (OD to 3rd and back while driving at freeway speeds). You tranny is not overheating like most people believe, its the switch. Mechanics are telling alot of people that their tranny needs replaced. Watch Out For These People!! They only want your money!!

No. The crankshaft pully can be removed through the right wheel well area. (This is the hard part) Once the pully is off, the seal is relatively easy to change.

You describe a internal transmission failure Check the transmission fluid what is the color if its blackish then you have transmission failure. Your fix is another transmission rebuilt

P1744 - Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Position.

Either way the problem points to an internal transmission problem.
1. Drive it and see if the codes come back, and see if it is slipping in overdrive.

2. Check the transmission pressure in drive, with the overdrive on and the transmission slipping.

These transmissions have a high failure rate. Have seen internal transmission slippage that showed up in drive with the Overdrive (OD) switch on, but not with the OD switched off. It was related to the coasting clutch being on and off in that range. In that case, there was an internal mechanical transmission problem. We recommend a rebuilt transmission from the dealer and an external transmission cooler - the new rebuilt transmission will last longer.

Transmission started to slip then now will not go, fluid doesn't look bad doesnt smell burnt, can i change the fluid and filter


These vehicles are known for the failure of the clutch packs (internal gearing inside of automatic transmissions), if you still have fluid and no leaks, the most common failure is the clutch pack or control valve inside the transmission. I would recommend a trip to aamco or another reputable transmission shop in your area, diagnosis is usually free.

Transmission hesitates going in drive. shifts fine, does not slip, full of oil. does not hesitate in reverse. 1995 mazda 626, auto. transmission, 4 cylinder, front wheel drive.


A common problem with Mazdas, it's a sign that the transmission is worn out. There is a seal on a hydraulic system that activates the clutch for Drive. When this seal wears out, it leaks and it takes longer for the clutch to engage. The only way to repair it is to take the transmission apart. You may be told to try flushing the the transmission, chances are this won't work. The seal needs to be replaced.

Just purchased a 2002 mazda 626 4 cyl automatic. they said the trany is pouring out trany fluid after you drive it and it sits over night. big puddle in the morning. i have been now reading online that...


I would fix that one because it would be a big hassle to change over, You would have to change cv joints install shifter and cables. I haven't seen to many 626 with trans leaks but It would be worth it to fix.

Smoke on startup mazda 626


If it's the org. engine it will has over 150,000 miles on it.
It's normal to has the valve seal/oil seal on the head to leak oil into the cyclinder.

The smoke you see is the motor oil drop from the seals. It land on the top of the cyclinders and it create black smoke at start up.

The inexpensive fix is to start using high mileage oil with seal conditioner.
This will help soften the rubber seals and help reduce internal oil leak.

The correct fix is to wait until it's time for a head gasket replacement and let the professional service the head.

Complete head service is the only method to stop this internal oil drip problem.
