2004 Audi A4 Quattro starting quirk

I have an 2004 Audi Quattro A4. The past two nights when leaving work when I turn the key to start the car the first time, nothing happens (like the battery is dead except all dash lights come on). I turn it back to off, and crank a second time and it fires right up. Any ideas on what could be going on would be appreciated...really don't want to get stranded somewhere if it decides to just not start at all!

Thank you for the suggestion. I am taking the car back to the dealership mechanic next week so they can replace the glovebox and check for an antifreeze leak. I bought the car in November and since then have replaced thermostat, waterpump (and timing belt because it made sense), and then the cooling flange. I will mention your suggestion to their mechanic and see if he can test for this! I am glad I found "Fixya" ...I think it will be a great resource for me...especially since buying this Audi!

SOURCE: turn the key and nothing happens,no crank,no sound,no start

It seems that you have a loose wire, bad connector or perhaps the main computer itself that is causing a problem If the shop is not seeing any codes, or codes come and go, likely I'm right...but someone is going to have to actually do some intensive testing to find the real cause. You can likely get another computer from a local scrapyard far cheaper than what the dealer will charge far as wiring, you need a good accurate schematic a good volt/ohmeter and lots of time to trace wiring. When checking connectors test the pin, then probe the wire going into the pin...often the problem is where a wire meets the backside of the pin, either corroding or breaking..This also applies to any modules such as the security system...what you see on the dash does not always tell you that connection to components is good. This is not a "fix, but rather, a direction to go in. (exactly what I"d need to do if I was there)
Right now, everything is suspect including fuel system, till you rule it out!!!

SOURCE: can't remove key from ignition. battery is dead

If the battery is dead, the ignition keys will not release from the ignition. If there is no signal from the transmission shifter that it's in park since the battery is dead, then the ignition lock will not release the keys.  After charging the battery or jumping the blazer to start it and the key's still will not release, try this.
There is a "plunger" as part if the ignition. Under the steering wheel there is a small removable cap that you can take off and put a small screw driver up into and press the plunger in and it will release the key. Good luck and hope this helps, Keep me posted be glad to help.

SOURCE: Have an audi a4 1.8T Cabrio. Battery went dead,

I had the exact problem with my A4 2001 1,9 TDI but i just turned the car on, then first turned the steering wheel to the left as far as it goes, then to the right (i dont know if this is necessary but this is what i did). After i drove for few meters, the light went off and it worked normally.

98 Audi Quattro keys don't srping back after starting the engine

You have a bad Ignition Switch they are known to go out on the 90's audi's.

The part is pretty inexpensive but the labor maybe quite high.

When you start it make sure the key gets back to the proper position otherwise you will burn up your starter and cause another expensive problem.

My '95 Audi A6 Quattro blows only cold air when the heater is turned on to any temperature (the air outside is cold). Any suggestions? Thank you! Elizabeth Brrrrrr

Say Eliz make sure your radiator is full of antifreeze and make sure your over flow is at proper level.. If your low on fluid at all the heater will not get hot water to it to work properly .. this is a good start if it has been working in the past ... and thanks jerry
