A/T problems.
seems a bad tranny.
go to any tranny shop and ask for help.
this old car has no TCM brain, to get flash codes.
so , its 100% mechanical. and bad.
or read that page in the FSM on that symptom,. it does have that in the book, seen it. (you wont like the parts bad ,deep inside)

2000 silverado wont go into passing gear

Check the A and B shift solenoids in valve body. A combination of either solenoids on or off gives 4 speed selection. For instance all solenoids off gives 3rd gear for limp home. Sounds like 1 solenoid is off all the time for no 1st and 4th. Check solenoid chart to see which solenoid is on for 1st and 4th. That solenoid is either not turning on or a wiring connection between the transmission control module and that solenoid.

What does the shift solenoid look like and where does it connect, how is it to fix myself

The solenoid is inside the transmission. On this kind of issue, I recommend changing the transmission fluid and maybe adding some conditioner to the fluid. If that doesn't work, a transmission specialist will have to open the transmission to repair.

1998 buick regal LS 3.8 engine dies wont turn over and stuck in park.

Well , first off being stuck in gear, there probably is a problem with
The park lock solenoid prevents shifting out of the PARK position when the ignition switch is in LOCK, ACC, or OFF. The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) is designed to prevent shifting out of PARK when the ignition switch is in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position, without pressing the brake pedal. The BTSI solenoid and the park lock solenoid are energized when the ignition switch is in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position. When the park lock solenoid and the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) are energized, the mechanical lock connected to this park lock solenoid is pulled away from the shifter. The stop lamp switch receives ignition voltage in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position from the BTSI Fuse and is normally closed, providing voltage through circuit 1135 to the BTSI solenoid, energizing the solenoid and mechanically locking the transmission shift lever whenever it is in PARK. When the brake pedal is pressed, the stop lamp switch opens, removing voltage from circuit 1135 to the BTSI solenoid. The BTSI solenoid is de-energized and the mechanical lock connected to the BTSI solenoid pulls back from the shifter allowing shifting.

You would do well to buy a service repair manual subscription from ALLDATA OEM Auto Repair Information for Professionals you have no idea of the complexity of the electronics on your vehicle . You will need wiring diagrams to sort out your electrical issues , suggest you watch videos on youtube for voltage drop testing . if your dad doesn't know electrical testing .

1991 toyota 4runner,2wheel drive,3.0 engine. The transmision will not down shift to low sometimes after stopping.I can manually bring it down i think to second and then go. This problem does not occur all...

I had the same problem on my '92 4runner and it was the 1-2 shift solenoid. The solenoids can be checked with an ohm meter but may read okay. Then while in service and warm, they will intermittently fail. I ended up changing the 1-2 shift solenoid and it solved the shift problem.

3rd and 4th gear slipage in 4l60e

Try the vacuum line to the kickdown solenoid. If its not cracked your tranny may need to be rebuilt. Flushing and filter may help also.
