You need compression, fuel, and spark for the engine to run. So one of the three is missing from the equation.
You would need to know if it is lack of fuel or spark to proceed. Its probably not compression since it does finally start back up. It could be a relay or any number of other things. I would guess it is something electric.

Up to you about grinding . Easier to drop tank and check all elctricals. Nephew didnt and had a short. Almost blew up. Had a similar problem with motor cutting off. My problem was a diode in the alternator
