Question about GMC Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1994 GMC 2500 Truck. Battery died last night due to cold weather. Was able to jump start with another vehicle. Ran it for an hour. Shutoff and then restarted an hour later. Started fine. let sit over

I'm sure cold weather is playing a big factor in this, but i don't know.

SOURCE: 2001 chevy silverado 1500 v8 battery drain after sits for 1or2day

, do a simple test on the charging system...check battery voltage. should be 12v or better. start engine & check volts at idle, no accessories on. volts should read 13.5 -14v. Turn on all accessories(including headlamps on high) volts should drop slightly but should not creep down. Definitely not below 12.5. If voltage drops lower than 12.5, the regulator (in the alternator) is not working. either change regulator or change entire alternator. Alternator drive belt should have sufficient tension so that alternator cannot be turned easily by hand. If it can, check belt tensioner.

SOURCE: My Nissan Almera won't start due to cold weather.

check voltage at battery, when running it should be 14 volts or a little higher, when engine is off it should be at least 13 volts at battery. if the alternator is not charging it will not replenish battery. if the alternator when running puts out at least 14 volts, then I would say its your battery. not letting car start. the battery could very well be bad. if you do not have a tester, any auto parts will test for voltage for free.

Sounds like the cold start solenoid. It is designed to keep the engine running at a set RPM until it reaches a specific engine temp.

Bad battery or alternator. Jump it again and with it running, pull off the positive battery cable. If it dies, its a bad alternator. If it stays running, its a bad battery.

You may have internal engine damage . broken cam or can.. try to turn the engine manually with a wrench to see if there is any problem while rotate it. In the cold weather when you start engine especially been sitting for too long, engine part need to be lubricated fast otherwise damage it will occur. check and smell the engine oil for strange condition

Get the battery tested at your local auto parts store (no cost to you). If your battery is able to be recharged then I would have they check the alternator afterwards. More than likely it is your battery though. Can you jump start the truck? It is important to use another truck or simliar size vehicle due to the cold cranking amps needed. In other words dont get a ford fiesta to try and jump start your truck.

You need to fully charge the battery then attach the jump leads as a boost, if the vehicle is diesel, when left for a long time the fuel syphons back towards the tank. If the vehicle ran perfect before you left it the chances are there will be nothing wrong with it now, try and give the vehicle a short tow this will help pump fuel to the engine, Depending on your capability if the vehicle is petrol remove a spark plug place it in the end of the ignition lead, place next to metal on the engine and crank over the engine, a spark should be at the electrode of the spark plug, DO NOT HOLD THE SPARK-PLUG AS YOU MAY RECEIVE An ELECTRIC SHOCK. If there is a spark your problem will be in the fuel circuit. Items to check in sequence.

ste_signum_t_10.jpgI hope this helps, check simple things first before you strip the vehicle down this will save money.

Steve.

you should check the voltage on your batttery when the car is running. If it reads about 13.5 to 14 volts, your alternator is doing it's job. If it's less, replace the alternator. If the alternator is ok, you have a power drain somewhere, you will need a proffesional to look at it.

1994 corolla: hard to start

If it is happening more frequently in cold or damp weather it could be a spark issue. Wet or damp weather can effect spark plug wires if there is even minor damage to them (usually occurs durring rain). The other things that come to mind are the fuel pump and lastly the fuel line check ball that is in the fuel tank. If it is leaking then all the fuel in the line will drain back into the tank over night (pressure lost in the fuel line) and this will cause repeated, extended cranking when you first start the car in the morning or after the car has sat for several hours.

Won't start after battery died and recharged

Sounds like low voltage.
Get a boost from another car with a good set of cables.
Once started check voltage with booster car disconnected.
Is it around 14 volts?
If so,the truck is charging, so it may be time for a new battery.

If the voltage is at 12 or lower while running the truck is not charging.
May be time for a new alternator.

The battery should have charged enough in 1 hour to start the truck.
You may need a battery and alternator.

could just be the oil if you are in a really cold environment (near or below 0), make sure to use 5w-30 versus 10w-30 which is suited for warmer climates..
