I had that same problem. There is a gear shift lock button to the right of the gear shifter that has to be pressed down before you can unlock the gear shifter and the key.

Does anyone know what the recalled part is for the Chevy Cobalt that causes the key to get stuck in the ignition? I would greatly appreciate any help on this as I do not have $600 to get it fixed.

when you shut it off were the wheels cranked sideways-sometimes this puts pressure on the locking system and won't let it disengage-try moving the steering wheel back and forth while applying pressure to the key-I hope this helps-cheers Denny

My key was stuck in the car all nite i got it out but i think the engine is locked is it a security lock?

I had the same problem with my 2007 cobalt and the problem is that there is a small bar in the shifter that is supposed to hit a microswitch and that bar on mine came out of place and it was not hitting that micro switch to allow the ignition to release the key when the car is in park. what i did was tear the center council apart and pull the whole shift mechonism out and reposition the bar and put it all back together. its a pain and time consuming
