Question about Mitsubishi Mighty Max

1 Answer

No acceleration power

Only when the engine is cold, and the check engine light comes on while on the highway, it will decelerate like my foot is off the gas no matter how much I press it. I have to take my foot off the gas completely and re apply it to get the car to try and accelerate again. it sometimes bucks and sputters during throttle as long as the check engine light is on, which is again only first thing in the morning. if I pull over and cut it off and restart it, the light is still on, and after a few minutes it will shut off on it's own and it runs fine like nothing ever happened. all sensors are plugged in securely and dry. I recently changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pcv valve (and cracked the valve cover tightening it down) fuel filter, and air filter. could this be a mass air flow sensor, o2 sensor, or egr valve? I did push the diaphram in the egr valve up and it moves freely. and for backround purposes I did seafoam the truck like a week ago by pouring in through brake booster line into the intake manifold. thank you

Any trouble codes? There should be a code registered by now. That should point you to the problem. And if not, you probably need to look at the sensors data feed when the problem is going on. Look at live streaming data, I mean, the MAF, oxygen sensor, in fact all of the sensor data.

Check engine light on? Any codes? Missed before and after the cap was changed? Or is the cap new so you assume its good. I have had caps bad out of the box.

I would expect a "check engine" light and a code if your O2 sensor was bad. You checked codes, right?

What causes car to stall while driving

Honestly, it is not possible to answer your question accurately without further detail.
  • How fast are you going when the vehicle stalls?
  • Are you on open highway or in stop-and-go city traffic?
  • Are you accelerating? Decelerating? Idling?
  • Are you going uphill? Level road? Downhill?
  • What are the ambient weather conditions? Hot? Cold? Clear? Rainy? Daytime? Night time? Lights on? Lights off?
  • Is your CHECK ENGINE light illuminated while the car is running? If so, have you extracted the codes?
  • Were there any precursor symptoms to the failure?
  • Have you tried any diagnostic steps?
Also, please understand that it is not uncommon for a 12 year old vehicle to experience failures. Has it had a major tune-up? Has it been properly maintained? Do you know the repair history of the vehicle?

All dash lights spontaneously come on. Go off in steps as decelerate. Off at stop. Come back on as accelerate.

Bad voltage regulator in alternator or short somewhere. Sounds like voltage regulator or belt slipping and not allowing alternator to work properly

sounds like your egr valve is opening too far at part throttle and sticking open. it is actuated by solenoids that open and let engine vacuum in. you were on a good path in checking the vacuum lines. however this may require replacing the egr valve and gasket. the egr valve is circular in shape on top and usually is bolted down with two bolts. its located on the engine side facing the firewall.

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.
