If the old solenoid had a bad short it may have put your new starter out of commission. Have the starter tested-it should still have warranty for repllacement.
If the starter motor remained engaged when you released the key, the underlying cause is likely a bad starter solenoid (first item the positive battery cable connects to after the battery) Remaining engaged, can damage the starter itself. Replace the solenoid, check the starter and you should be finished. (Or also replace the starter if it was damaged) If the starter was stuck and not engaging, the bendix drive inside the starter has failed...In that case it's best to change the starter as even though it's replaceable, generally by the time it needs replacement the starter is worn in other areas and would need complete overhaul.
Buy a replacement starter, follow the enclosed instructions. save your old starter for a deposit refund.
If you have the 6 cyl model the job is just a little bit harder since you have to loosen the battery container and move it aside a little to reach the 2 bolts holding the starter.
Changing StarterIts easy, jack the car up, secure the car with in the up position do not just rely on the jack to hold it up and you will see the starter on the passenger side of the car, its held on with 2 bolts. Disconnect the battery first, then loosen and remove the 2 bolts holding the starter in place. Slide the starter out, disconnect the wires coming from the battery. Reverse the procedure to replace the starter.
hj75-- make sure you have fuel, then on the right hand side of the motor is the injector pump "(do you know how to bleed it?) if not you may have to come back and i will walk you through it but first , get some aerostart ,or starter fluid, take the top off the air cleaner and after the heater light goes out squirt the starter fluid in the top of air cleaner,NOT TOO MUCH .that will make it fire ,best if there is two of you ,so that turning the motor over and the fluid spraying happen at the same time.if it misses a lot when it starts you need to get your glow plugs checked .if it doesnot start after 2 goes like that then you will have to bleed it.if you want help there come back and i will walk you through---- let me know what ever happens "youdoit"
