VW Phaeton heater blows cold air if temps outside are about 20 or lower, above 20 degrees outside and it blows warm air. (??)

If you want to back wash just reverse the hoses on the outside where they connect to the heater core. if that don't work look on each hose and see if one of them has a device that has a vacuum line running to it . If there is this is a water shut off thats activated when the air con is on. temporarly you can just put a coupling in where the device comes out

You can put a higher temp thermostat and that should help, but it should at least have 170 degree air right now if it was working right. There are two other things you might check for, the diverter door make some sound when you switch from heat to cool and back, I can't tell you for sure if it is a manual, vacumn or electric but that would definitely cause it to blow cold air. There is also a valve which cuts off circulation to the heater core when your not using it. This valve will be in line with the heater hoses going to your heater core. I have seen some that were actually part of the heater core box. I feel pretty sure one of these will be your problem. Also if your car is low on coolant it would not heat properly. Ok, have your coolind system backflushed. Your heater core could be clogged. This could have been caused in using the wrong antifreeze system or mixing the green with the vw g-12 antifreeze. This could ran you about $110 to 150 dollars at a radiator shop...stay away from the Jidffy lube or oil doctor's . This could be your cheaper alternative to solution to your problem..good luck..

The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.
if the car is not overheating, the thermostat is working fine.... replace or flush the heater core multiple times to try and eliminate sediment build-up.

Sounds like a thermostat and/ or the system is low on coolant.
Its probably not going to reach 200 degrees when the outside air temp is below freezing, but you should get plenty of heat if the system is working correctly.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix with a digital climate control system. The heat quit working, it doesn't blow out any heat. Now that it is warm outside the air stopped blowing out any air. The digital temperature on the climate control is not correct. When it states that it is below 30 degrees on the ext and it is warm outside the air wont be cold. Once it starts going above 30 degrees the air gets colder. Today the blower stop working all together. Was told it maybe the climate control unit was bad. You can hear the door opening/shutting when you switch the temp from cold to hot. But there was no heat blowing out whatsoever in the winter time. Could you please give me your opinion on whether or not it is the climate control unit or something else?

My 2003 Rendezvous heater blows cold air when it is stopped, and it blows hot air when driving. I have topped off the resevoir fill tank with coolant. The engine is not overheating and I don't notice any...


It may just be the way the car works. I have a 2005 Altima and it does the same thing, but just doesn't blow really warm air. Try putting the air on recirculating, that may help a little. If it's still REALLY cold when you are stopped, I would check/replace the thermostat first. If you want to check the thermostat to see if it's working yourself, just remove it, and inspect it while it is cold, then put it in a pot of boiling water for 3 mins, inspect it, if the valve has opened it is okay, if it looks the same (aka valve was open to begin with) it may just be staying open and it should be replaced.

vw fit 3 types of aircon,
1.full climate control (you set temp is stays there)
2.climatronic (as your dealer said.....)
3.aircon std (cold draft)
you cannot change whats fitted to another type.

It may be the valve that controls the amount of water entering heating core but I'm wondering if your engine thermostat isn't stuck open. This is what controls the coolant temperature in your engine. It closes off while engine is off. It will remain closed after you start your car until the water warms to a certain temperature then it starts to open enough to keep your car at the proper operating temperature. If it stick open then it will take a lot longer for the engine to heat up and on smaller cars might never heat up enough for your heater. If you live in very cold climates such as where I live in Wyoming, we have to change to a higher degree thermostat so we have a good heater when it's 30 below zero.

Be very cautious here but one way you can check this is to put a piece of cardboard in front of your radiator and stop the airflow that cools your engine coolant. THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR CAR TO HEAT UP AND CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE IF IT OVERHEATS. Don't completely cover the radiator but if your heater warms up when you put the cardboard in front of radiator it's a good sign that your thermostat is stuck open and needs to be replaced.

2001 Suzuki XL-7. Heater blows hot one side, cold the other.


No ductwork [to the lower vents] under the dash. They are part of the heater core / blower housing is integrated (all one piece).

After reviewing shop manual, we suspect that one of the three damper flaps is not positioning correctly; or debris has blocked one side (which makes more sense given the symptoms).

We're waiting for the temperatures to get back in the plus numbers to check out the physical arrangement.

Its just a vent damper plate not operating, it's like a gate which controls the flow of air,,usually they are operated by vacuum, or cables.
Service center time, unless you are handy with your own repairs.
