Diesel?? Black some is unburned fuel, due to poor combustion. Get a compression test, but you may also have a leaky injector.
Gas engine?? Due to too much fuel, too rich. Make sure air filter is clean, Clean up your intake and IAC system. Scan it if it continues.

You either have a fuel injector stuck open ( would need replaced to fix ) or a bad coil pack or spark plug. Check engine light should also be on indicating a problem and a code scan should tell you which cylinder has the problem.

i've been telling people exhaust leak for their problems all night... and you know what... i think it's an exhaust leak =)
seriously check everything from the block to the manifold and look for anything not connected. If you can smell strong exhaust under the hood as opposed to standing behind the car, or if your air filter get dirty incredibly fast, or if your performance degrades (generally cuz i know cars are touchy and weird) as your foot pushes on the gas (not necessarily higher rpm, but actually burning more gas) particularly when it gets hot, that really might be it.

SOURCE: mitsubishi shogun sport 2001 2.5 sounds like its running on 3 cylinders blows black smoke. also when you rev the engine it revs out, i turn the car off and its still reving out and have to stall it f
sounds like its running on the engine oil sometimes the air in take system can pull the oil from sump and engineruns on the oil .very dangerous cause no control on engine
have you over fillled it with oil this can cause your problem
