Question about 2006 Scion xB Wagon

1 Answer

Won't start New battery, new fuel pump/sock (the old pump was 180k miles old), new plugs (2k miles ago). I have checked for fouled plugs/coils, everything looks good. I even re-gapped the plugs just to be sure. I've seen some people state that a dirty/failed mass air flow sensor and/or an air temperature intake sensor can prevent starting. Is this true? I've cleaned the MAF with CRC MAF cleaner, and the engine won't start. I'm getting fuel (when I open the airbox, I smell gasoline), and the engine is turning over, but it won't start. Before I waste $85 on a new MAF, can Scion dealerships test them for Ohms range and current capacity? My multi-meter doesn't have prongs long enough to get to the MAF filaments, and no parts stores I've visited have been able to test it for me.

Mostly the only things that will stop an engine sensor-wise is the crank and cam sensors. Failure of other sensors will immediately cause the management computer to switch to the get-you-home programme, record the fault and switch on the engine light but will not prevent the engine starting and running.

Your description doesn't mention that you have physically checked the spark.

Another thing that prevents an engine starting is the anti-theft device. A friend happend to leave his keys on the microwave and couldn't start his car until it had been towed to the dealer.
Might be a good idea to check what the handbook says about that...

SOURCE: 2006 scion TC Hard starting

Does it start if you give it gas when turning the key? I had a grand prix that would not want to start unless I gave it gas. It was an easy fix. I changed the air filter, used MAF cleaner to clean the MAF and I also took the throttle body apart and cleaned that. The throttle body had a black build up in it that I cleaned up with throttle body cleaner.

SOURCE: My 2004 Scion xB will not start.

you may want to check the fuel injector. Check by starting the car then pull out spark plug wires one at a time. if you find that the car does no try and stall after removing any of the wires then its the fuel injector

What happened? Same thing happened to my chevy cavalier and it turned out to be the gasoline pump. It happened after 15 months again. Too bad its my wife's car, otherwise I would have gotten another Scion XB.

Would the timing keep a 1996 ford thunderbird from starting

Your car only needs three things to run:

Fuel
Air
Spark

If you have checked the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, leads, and coil(s), then you are either looking at a mechanical fault, or electrical fault.
You haven't mentioned yet if the car has spark, only that you replaced the leads and the plugs. Try pulling a plug out, plugging it into a lead, grounding it and cranking the engine. Do you have spark?
If not, then check and replace the coil(s) and try again.
Also check the condition of the air filter.

1989 ford f 150 i been driving and the engine stop fuel have don't start

could be fuel pump, check for fuel see if fuel pump supplying fuel and you are getting spark.make sure ignition timing is correct and the idle speed setting correct check the under hood emissions information label.also check engine make sure engine not over heating check cooling fan clutch see if cooling fan clutch is okay by turning it by hand if engine is hot cooling fan should have resistance if engine is hot, if cooling fan feel loose no resistance the fan clutch is bad.

1995 oldsmobile cutless has trouble with stalling.

Your problem may be one of the following:
First check or just replace the fuel filter. Usually located under the car in front of the rear axle, drivers side.
Next, the fuel pump may be worn out. Usually they just stop working (running).
Next, check the fuel pressure regulator. Usually located on the front fuel rail, drivers side.
Is the vacuum line attached? Not leaking or rotted?
Also, do you smell a strong fuel odor when it won't start? May be one or more stuck-open injectors, or the coil pack is bad.
Checking these in the order listed will more than likely fix your problem.
The clicking noise indicates the battery can no longer run the starter, which also means the fuel pump won't run either.

It could be a fuel issue. How old is the fuel filter? Can you hear the pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on? Try turning the key to ON without trying to start engine three times waiting for the pump to stop running each time. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, Its a form of Vapor lock caused by the extreme heat we have had lately.

If none of this works, try a new fuel filter first. From there have someone check the fuel pressure regulator and then the pump. If you are in need of a new pump, take my word for it and spend the money to get one from GM, and not from your favorite parts store. Most parts store parts are made in China and they are JUNK.

Have you hooked a scanner to the computer and checked the oxygen sensor(s)? If they are bad they could lean out the engine.

Also, a restricted exhaust system can lower engine performance. If you dont know old the plugs and wires are, replace them. With plug wires, its the age not the miles. How old is the coil pack? It could be "breaking down" at higher rpm

Hi, Ok you have confirmed that it's not a fuel problem. You need to check for spark. Pull the coil wire off of the coil(secondary lead-looks like a spark plug wire) Have some one crank it over and listen for a popping sound. IF yes, spark is at the coil, that means all ignition sensors are working. Next check for spark at ends of wires after cap. IF no replace cap and rotor. IF yes remove a couple spark plugs and check for fouling(wet, fuel etc...) IF yes replace or clean plugs and retest for starting. IF no spark is present at coil you need to scan computer and watch for rpm signal. IF no rpm signal, replace crankshaft sensor with OEM delco part. BIGGEST problem with these engines is Cap and Rotor burn out.

Regardless of age, battery discharging first needs to be addressed and fixed - bad battery or something in car (like a light) may be staying on when car is shut off.
Fuel pressure is too low - should be around 50psi and may be caused by an intermittent fuel pump or regulator problem.
The cause of the other problems is usually with the IAC or MAF sensors or the EGR valve - fouling at the EGR, IAC and/or throttle body is to be expected for a car this old.
