You would do well to take the timing belt cover off and turn the engine over using a spanner on the bottom pulley. Make sure the crankshaft pulley and can belt pulley are both turning . Find the timing marks on bottom pulley and crankshaft and then turn them and make sure they line up with timing marks. Also make sure timing belt hasn't snaped our lost some teeth.
If you have already turned it over you may need to give it a compression check to make sure you did not bend your valves. Set your timing mark to top dead center and take off your upper belt cover. Check the cam mark to the timing mark (TDC) on the lower cover. That will tell you if the belt is on correctly. If the timing marks check out you may have just flooded the motor . New plugs will assist in starting the motor if they are just WET fouled.
lots of possibilities. sounds like you may be out 180 degrees.
im thinking crank probably needs cylinder 1 at top dead center and then line the marks up.
best to double check the book.
Chances are your cam sprocket is off one tooth, bring the engine to Top dead center #1 cylinder firing stroke lining up the flywheel timing pointer notch to the timing marked zero. remove the timing belt cover to check that the timing marks line up if not remove tensioner and reset the sprocket so it lines up then reinstall tensioner recheck.
there are marks on cam gears and t-belt cover that will only line up on # 1 fire. Here you leave the belt and start tearing down. The new belt has marks that can only go one way and the crank does not have to be aligned perfecltly.
IF YOUR TIMING BELT BROKE OFF BEFORE YOU CHANGED THE TIMING BELT DO YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE COVER OFF OF THE HEAD VALVE LOOK AT THE CAMS AND YOU WILL SEE THAT THE VALVES ARE BENT IF THE CAM IS NOT TOUCHING THE VALVES ARE BENT BEFORE YOU ALINE THE CAM GEARS YOU HAVE TO PUT THE CRANK SHAFT GEAR IT HAS A MARK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OIL PEN MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU GET IT ALL SET UP RETURN THE GEAR TO THE MARK ON PULLY ALSO THE TIMING MARKS ON THE CAMS HAS TO MARKS ON THE COVER THE LEFT CAM GOES AT 12:00 THE RIGHT CAM MAKE SURE THE EXHAUST LINE LINES UP AT 12:00 OTHERWISE IT WONT START BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE NO COMPRESSION I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL FOR ANYBODY THAT NEEDS TO REPAIR THE ENGINE
