It could be the neutral safety switch if it is an automatic transmission car. If it is a manual transmission car their is a safety switch in the clutch pedal. If these check out ok then check the starter solenoid

SOURCE: can't remove car key

I assume that your car has an automatic transmission - If so, try holding your shift lever higher in the PARK position when you try to remove the key.

Ignition lock and switch

it is possible that when the key jammed it actually broke one of the actuator arms in the steering column so when the key is turned it is not moving the arm hence not moving the switch for starting purposes. located the switch under the steering column and remove it. try to start the car manually using it. if it works the actuator arm inside the column is broken and needs to be replaced.

Is replacing the ignition lock cylinder the same as replacing the ignition switch?

No. The switch itself is actually farther down on the steering column (nearly to your feet), operated by a rod that is pushed by the lock cylinder. If you're not pretty mechanically inclined, this is not a job for an amateur. Lots of little pieces to lose, etc.

Have 05 1500 Avalanche 4x4 with 5.3L having problem with ignition(?). Started out that when I started it the heater fan would not come on, dash lights not go off and could not put in 4 wheel drive with...

I think you were on the right track with the key lock and ignition switch. It sounds like the lock is not turning the switch far enough.
There are gears between the lock cylinder and switch that may not be aligned up right.
The anti-theft system would prevent the engine from cranking, but the security light should be flashing if the system thinks the truck is being stolen.

Even with the reprogrammed key's the engine would crank, it might not start but it would crank over so that leave's only one thing, your used ignition switch is bad.

How do i remove key lock cylinder on steering column to replace with new one?

Turn ignition key/lock cylinder to the ON position. Insert a thin screwdriver into the slot adjacent to the switch attaching screw boss (right-hand slot). Depress the spring latch located at the bottom of the slot to release the key/lock cylinder. Remove the cylinder.
to remove key-lock cylinder switch Ignition Switch

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering column shroud and lower the steering column.
3. Detach the ignition switch electrical hardness connector.
4. Remove 2 nuts retaining the ignition switch to the steering column housing.
5. Lift the ignition switch upward to disengage the actuator rod from the switch and remove the switch.

To install:

> When installing the ignition switch, both the locking mechanism at the top of the column and the switch itself must be in the LOCK position for correct adjustment. To hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the shift lever into PARK (with automatic transmissions) or REVERSE (with manual transmissions), turn the key to the LOCK position, and remove the key. New replacement switches, when received, are pinned in the LOCK position by a metal shipping pin inserted in a locking hole on the side of the switch.

6. Engage the actuator rod in the ignition switch.
7. Place the ignition switch on the steering column housing and loosely install 2 retaining nuts.
8. Move the switch up or down along the column to locate the mid-position of the actuator rod lash, then tighten the retaining nuts to 47-64 inch. Lbs. (5-7 Nm).
9. Raise the steering column into position at instrument panel. Install steering column shroud.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
11. Remove the locking pin, connect the battery cable, and verified that the engine will only crank in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also check to make certain the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions.
