How do I lock in my 4x4 if My actuator is not working

If the actuator is not working and you need to engage your 4x4 to get home, you can manually lock in your 4x4 system using the front axle's manual locking hubs (assuming your vehicle has manual locking hubs). Here are the steps to manually lock in your 4x4 system:
  1. Locate the manual locking hubs on the front wheels of your vehicle. They are typically located at the center of the wheel hub, and will have a dial or lever that you can turn or pull to engage the hub.
  2. Make sure your vehicle is in neutral, with the parking brake engaged.
  3. Turn the dial or lever on each manual locking hub to the "lock" position. This will physically engage the front axle, allowing power to be transferred to the front wheels.
  4. Engage your 4x4 by shifting the transfer case lever into the appropriate 4x4 mode (4-Hi or 4-Lo).
  5. Test your 4x4 by driving slowly in a straight line. If you hear any grinding or feel any vibrations, stop immediately and check your manual locking hubs and 4x4 system.
It's important to note that driving in 4x4 mode on dry pavement can cause damage to your drivetrain, so be sure to disengage your 4x4 system and unlock your manual locking hubs once you're back on solid ground.

On a 1994 Nissan D21, do I need some type of conversion kit or something to change automatic locking hubs to manual? Or do I just buy the manual locking hubs?

Im a locking hub kind of a guy my self and have ownned 4x4 Nissans .
But I have never heard going from electroinicly locking hubs to manaul lock .
I remember a recall with the locking hub inner bearing seal issue that seized the hub shaft to the inner bushing but the bearings wore huge and didn't effect them .
Unless you know something I don't I don't think this can be done

4x4 Manual locking hub stuck in "lock"

What I have done in the past when manual locking hubs were difficult, is have a friend get in the vehicle and slowly roll backwards while I attempted to unlock the hub.

1997 isuzu rodeo 4x4 problem

Only the "S" model has the manual locking hubs.
Auto locking hubs look like normal center on a whel; only bigger. Manual locking hubs woul have and indent in the middle of hub and a raised ridge to grab with your finger to rotate the hub into the locked position. There should be some writting on the hub edge telling you which way to turn to lock and unlock.

Hubs do quit working. Jack both front wheels off of the ground and lock the hubs but leave the transfer case in 2wd. If you spin one wheel the other should spin backwards. If not replace the hubs. If they do spin correctly, you may have a transfer case problem or a front chunk problem.
