94 ranger 4x4 randomly have trouble shifting into gears
There is a lot of play in my shift box and I will occasionally have problems shifting into 1st. If i shift into 5th or reverse then it always goes right into 1st, but if going from neutral straight into 1st it always gets stuck.

The grinding and difficulty shifting out of 4x4 Low in your 1991 K1500 could be due to a few possible causes:
1. Transfer case issues: There could be a problem with the transfer case itself, such as worn gears, damaged shift forks, or a faulty shift linkage. This can result in difficulty shifting out of 4x4 Low and the grinding sensation.
2. Synchronization issues: The synchronization mechanism in the transfer case may be worn or damaged, leading to difficulty disengaging 4x4 Low. This can cause grinding as you try to shift it out.
3. Clutch or clutch linkage problems: If the clutch is not fully disengaging, it can prevent the transfer case from shifting out of 4x4 Low smoothly. Issues with the clutch linkage, such as a worn clutch linkage bushing or misadjusted clutch pedal, can also contribute to this problem.
It is recommended to have a qualified mechanic inspect and diagnose the specific cause of these symptoms. They can perform a thorough examination of the transfer case, clutch system, and associated components to identify any faults or wear. Once the problem is identified, the necessary repairs or adjustments can be made to resolve the issue with shifting out of 4x4 Low and the grinding sensation.
Ford Rangers and Mazda b-series vehicles are the same. I would be willing to bet it is a problem with your shift motor. There is a sensor on the motor that tells the "shift computer" where it is in regards to position. The sensor has a ceramic disk that is glued to a shaft. The glue dries out and the disk doesn't spin with the shaft, so the computer doesn't know the position. You can disassemble the shift motor and re-glue, or just replace the entire shift motor assembly. It's $85 - $100 for a remanufactured unit from Napa (or similar). I just did this for my '94 Ranger, tore it apart and fixed it.
Before doing any of that I would check the 4x4 fuse in the box under the hood. The other fuse to check is inside the cab. It is on the same circuit as the warning lights (if your dash warning lights work, that fuse is fine).
Here's a guide for troubleshooting other transfer case issues.

There is a black box behind the jump seat on the drivers side. You have to remove the panel to get to it. There is a button on the box that resets the shift motor on the transfercase. It this don't fix the problem, then the shift motor is going bad. I hope this helps.
the shift sinkcranizers are dry .may have to pull the shifter and use some white lithum grease on it work the shifter from gear to gear working in the grease drive the truck for about 25-30 miles and change trans fluid
Hello there.Im assuming you have a push button 4 wheel drive,if so you have a bad electric shift motor on the transfercase, faulty shift button or your transfercase is worn and the elec. motor is having trouble shifting it in 4 wheel drive.Hope this helps.John.
For the information given, and assuming forr a 94 it has a bunch of miles, I would bet on a slipping clutch along with a pressure plate that is glazed over. I doubt the transfer case, that's just a chain drive mechanism with nothing much to slip in there. In 2 wheel drive the transfer case drives pretty much straight through and shouldn't add to the problem.
If the clutch has over 80K on it, replace and resurface the pressure plate at the same time.
Does the clutch pedal have about 1/4" of play before it begins to engage? If not adjust the clutch play 1st and see if that helps.
Let me know if you have a further symptoms to share.
