Question about 1998 Volvo S70

2 Answers

1998 Volvo V70 A/C starts off cold, runs for 5-10 minutes, then stops cooling. I brought it in for a charge and test, and all went fine, held pressure, held a charge. If I shut the AC off and let it sit for a bit, I can then turn it back on and it will work. Somehow it is getting cooler than it should be and literally icing up, which gives me that dank smell from the AC. The garage I took it to says I need to bring it to Volvo, that they do not have the testing gear for this. However he said if he to guess it is a sensor. He said there are two sensors and one has to 'talk' with the AC system, which it isn't doing, or is giving the wrong info. If the part is inexpensive (relatively), I would rather replace it and see what happens then bring it in for a repair, where I am purchasing new parts and incurring a shop charge.

Once you remove the freon from the system, it will need to be evacuated (pumped into a vacuum of approx 22") You will also need to have a gauge set in order to recharge it properly. These items are expensive and unless you intend to do lots of a/c repair, they are generally not part of a home shop. In addition to tools you need experience with a/c repair. If you do not have this, you can replace the switch, but can really go no further (not correctly anyway) Your problem sounds like a system restriction and likely needs professional diagnosis to verify.

It sounds like the ac pressure switch, or pressostat, is bad and not telling the compressor to turn on.

Issue with dash lights dimming while driving,

If the battery and alternator tested fine. I would have the charging system rechecked when engine is hot and at high rpm's. This way the checks are being done as if you were driving and driving for a long time. Alternators can work fine when cold but weaken when hot or stop working. This problem is not rare but only is seen occassionly. Unless it was checked at an electrical shop the average shop doesn't run these tests for they don't see the problem often enough to automaticly run them at all times. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

A/C not working properly

There is what is called a low pressure switch in the system that will not allow the system to run unless there is a complete charge in the system, what is happening is that the system is "Short cycling" due to low pressure, you can purchase a re charge kit at the local Autozone or Pepboys and that will fix the problem.

Try the fuel injection relay they are located under the hood. They blow out every few years on my Volvo. The car starts to quit all of the sudden. It is either red or green colored. It is located in the fuse box under the hood.
