It sounds like the window regulator is broken. The regulator and motor come as an assembly from GM and Dorman may have a aftermarket one for it as well. You will need to remove the inner door trim panel to install this. Use duct tape to secure the window in the up position while you do it so that you don't lose a hand if the window decides to slide down like a guillotine.

I heard a rod fall or that is what it sounded like; the window ground a bit when closing it now the door will not open from either side

Sounds like somebody was breaking in. You have to get the door panel off so you can see what is going on in there. If the door is unlocked, maybe a slim jim will catch the handle and get it open. If the window motor is shot, or the gears, try pushing the window down by hand. if not try it with the switch. Get the window down and the door open, pull the panel, get the handles fixed and then the glass. Hope this helps.

Rear window keeps dropping on a 2001 Olsmobile Aurora

The motor may be faulty or the track may have came off the motor gear. You will have to remove the screws and pry off the door panel to gain access to window, frame, and motor
