My car 94 firebird was doing same thing until one night it left me stuck! the 'chip' on your key is not making good conact so the car thinks its the wrong key and activating security. you need to probably replace ignition. i put a piece of aluminum foil around chip and the car started! but of course thats a temp fix

I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is, if you have the keys with
the small 'computer chip' on the black plastic part then your car is
equipped with a sensor in the ignition (where you actually put the key
into) that is supposed to be able to sense the key, to make sure its
the real key. In many cases, the wires from this sensor become loose or
faulty and will trip that light.

If you have a 1997 pontiac firebird and it wont start because the security light keeps coming on what is the problem?

could be a security relean.
•Insure that the battery is fully charged.
•Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
•Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
•When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

1991 poniac firebird will not start and the secerrity light keeps flashing

The most likely cause of the problem is that your security module is not reading your key correctly. This is usually due to a defective key tumbler assembly. Try this to get it started:

1. Connect a battery charger or connect to another vehicle with jumper cables to keep the battery from running completely dead. If you set your parking brake before turning the key on, this will also help because it will keep your daytime running lamps from coming on.

2. Turn the key to the RUN position and wait about 10 minutes until the security light stops flashing.

3. Without turning the key off, turn the key to the START position and see if the engine will start.

If this does not work to get it started, you will have to tow it.
In either case, (whether you get it started or not, the key tumbler assembly probably needs to get replaced.

I got a lot of information about this security stuff from this website. When mine started acting up, i did a bypass on it. It was alot cheaper than a dealer mechanic. If you are looking to fix it correctly, I think taking it to the dealer is the best way to go, like said in above post.... Good luck

My 89 firebird will not start sometimes act like the security cause everything works but the starter and fuel pump wait 15 minutes and it starts right up it dont do it all the time just once in a while

This is an old problem we have seen before.

Replace the control module inside the HEI Distributor.

There is special grease under this module the removes heat and transfers it to the heat sink.
Over time the grease drys up and allows the pick up module to overheat.

Hope this tip helps.
