Question about 1992 Volvo 240

1 Answer

1987 Volvo Hood release cable is broken. I am having trouble getting the old cable out. There is a plastic unit right at the firewall. It looks like it is held in place by a circle of "teeth". How do I get the plastic unit out so I can replace the entire cable with my new replacement?

You can unhook the cable. The end of the cable housing should have a square face that mates with the handle.Pull down on the clip that is on the handle side, then pry at that seem, and when the square faces seperate, slide the cable down through the small slot cut. Now the cable should release easily from the handle.

How do I open the hood on a 1992 240 Volvo

Normally, you pull the lever that is beneath the driver side lower corner of the dash, right next to the fuse panel.
Since you are asking, I presume that the lever or the cable is broken. If it is broken at the lever, you can grip the end of the cable with vice grip pliers and pull on it. If it is broken up under the hood, you will have to reach through the grill and twist the plastic release buttons a quarter turn so you can push them up out and remove the grill, and then try to release the latch from there. This will not be easy, but many have done it. Next time, lube the latch and the cable every few years.

Pulling the hood latch handle does not release the hood on a 98 Volvo v70, it is not out of adjustment because the cable broke from the latch and pulling the cable itself with vice grips does nothing,...

The only suggestion that I can think of is to have someone push up and down on the hood while you pull the cable. This might lower the tension on whatever is binding. If there is a way to spray some lubricant with a plastic tube into the latch area, I would give it a try. Sorry this isn't more helpful. Just be glad it's not a Jag. Takes 5 hours of labor to open the hood on some models after the hood release handle breaks. Good luck!

Does any one know how to open the hood on a 1987 300e if the latch doesn't release

There is a release cable that is attatched to the red releas handle on the drivers under dash panel. You can grab that cable with needle nose pliers to release the hood to the first detent if the handle or cable is broken. There is a secondary release mechanism(called a hood tongue) which routes through the grille where the rectangular slot is once the hood is popped up with the release handle.you can grab the rest of the broken hood tongue with needle nose pliers and pull it out to completly release the hood from the saftey catch. If it is completely broken you can take a long screw driver and push the saftey catch( i beleive to the right) and the hood should be able to open all the way up. Both the hood tongue and the cable(securing portion at release handle) are common failures and break over the years.if it is at the release handle you are having a problem-get a #2 phillips screw driver and remove the release handle to gain access to the loose cable. I hope I have been helpful

Can not open the bonnet. The release by the drivers right knee does not seem to work, I can pull it but the latch by the radiator/grill does not seem to function. I have sprayed some WD40 onto the parts...

In order to get the hood/bonnet to open, you will have to grasp the end of the cable with pliers or better yet, vice grips, and pull the cable. But, you still need to figure out what is causing the problem. Check to see if the cable is broken or has simply come undone at the latch. You can try to find the cable where it comes through the firewall and trace it to the hood latch, looking to see if any clamps have loosened up that would allow the cable to move and get too much slack in it. Sure hope this helped you and good luck.

Broken Hood Release

Hello There

In short no there isn't, however it's most likely your plastic release lever is broken and not the metal cable, you need to open the cover over the release lever, there will be a cable you can pull using a gripper and it will release the bonnet, you can easily replace the plastic llever and it's reletively cheap.

Hope this helps, please don't forget to rate me.

The hood release on my 1993 chevy lumina snapped. the lever seems to have snapped from inside the car since it isnt attatced anymore. how much will this cost to fix at a shop?

YOU CAN FIX IT EASILY AT HOME IF IT IS JUST THE HANDLE. THE CABLE WOULD REQUIRE ABOUT 1-1.5 HOURS LABOR TO REPLACE SO DONT PAY MORE THAN THAT.

96 Intrepid broken hood cable,

It shouldn't be expensive as a new cable costs a couple of dollars at most, however you'll need to get the hood open before you can replace the cable. This will mean getting the car jacked up pretty high so you can get to the broken cable from beneath the car and cut off a piece of shroud, so you can release the hood lock by tugging on the cable itself. When that's done, tape the end of the new cable to the broken one that's been left on the inside of the car, and pull the new one through the opening on the firewall, connect it the same way as the old one, and to the hood latch aswell, and that should fixya! Hope that helps!
